WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Queens College men's tennis team wrapped up their two-match road stand with an East Coast Conference contest against the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia in the nation's capital.
The Knights would earn the hard fought doubles points to take an early 1-0 lead but the Firebirds would rally back by taking five of the six singles to defeat Queens to the final score of 5-2 Friday afternoon.
The Knights move to 6-3 overall and 1-1 in ECC play.
DOUBLES PLAY
Queens jumped ahead 1-0 in doubles play as the #1 duo of junior
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) and sophomore
Loup Alleno (Paris, France) defeated Louis Mangeon and Louka Queguiner to the score of 6-1.
The Firebirds would tie doubles play with a victory at #3 doubles as the Knights pair of sophomore
Caleb Brightman (Pawling, N.Y.) and rookie
Jaime Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) fell 7-5 against Oskar Karos and Filippo Vatteroni.
The #2 doubles duo of sophomore
David Cerne (Ljubljana, Slovenia) and rookie
Pablo Serrano (Cochabamba, Bolivia) earned a back-and-forth tiebreaker victory over Sebastiano Palma and Elouan Queguiner to the score of 7-6
(8-6) to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
SINGLES PLAY
The Knights would drop five of the six singles matches with rookie
Adam Laur (Boulogne Billancourt, France) the lone Knight to take a singles victory.
Rookie
Samuel Linck (Haarlem, Netherlands) dropped his match at #3 singles against Queguiner to the score of 6-1, 6-3 before Foix Sotos fell at #1 singles against Mangeon to the score of 7-5, 7-3 as the Firebirds took a 2-1 lead.
Trailing 1-0 after dropping the first set to the score of 6-3, Laur battled back against Palma at #4 singles as he earned a 7-5, 6-0 victory over the final two sets to tie the match at 2-2.
With the match tied at 2-2, The Firebirds would win the remaining three matches with Brightman falling short at #5 singles to the score of 7-6
(7-2), 6-3 against Oskar.
The home side clinched the match at #6 singles as Cerne fell 6-4, 6-1 against Filali Ghali.
Sophomore
Tim Andersson's (Linkoping, Sweden) match at #2 singles was the last match to finish in a thrilling back-and-forth contest against Queguiner as the sophomore fell short in a marathon three-set battle of 7-6
(9-7), 5-7, 6-7
(0-7) as the Knights dropped the ECC contest to the final score of 5-2 Friday afternoon.
