CLERMONT, FLA. – On Day Four of THE Spring Games, the Queens College softball team matched up against NSIC foes member Wayne State College Wildcats and Minnesota State University, Mankato Mavericks at Legends Field.
Game one of Wednesday would be a back-and-forth affair before sophomore utility
Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA.) drove in the winning run in the top of the fifth before she held the bats of Wildcats at bay as Queens earned a 4-3 victory. In their second game of the morning, the Knights were put under pressure quickly as the Mavericks took a commanding 9-0 lead after three innings before earning a 9-1 victory over the Knights.
Game Recap vs. Wayne State College
In a career day for sophomore left fielder
Sienna Denino (North Babylon, N.Y.) (2-2 AB, 2B, RBI, BB, R) the sophomore began her morning earning a walk before a single from Campbell
(2-4 AB, RBI, R) put two runners on and no outs. As the Wildcats got the first out, senior center fielder
Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (1-3 AB, 2B, RBI2) would give the Knights an early 2-0 lead with a two-RBI double to right center field.
With Campbell
(W, 3-1, 7H, 3ER, 3BB, 10K) in the circle to open the morning, the Wildcats would use back-to-back singles to cut Queens' advantage down to 2-1 before the righty left the tying run on base to end the bottom of the first inning.
The Wildcats opened the top of the second inning by retiring the first two batters before junior
Brianna Call (Fishkill, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, 2B, 2R) extended the inning with a double before a double from Denino extended the Knights advantage to 3-1 as the sophomore recorded her first double and RBI of her career.
As Campbell retired the Wildcats in order including two looking strikeouts in the home frame of the second, the Wildcats would keep the Knights offense at bay in the top of the third.
But Wayne State would respond as they tied the game 3-3 using three hits but the sophomore left two runners stranded to take a 3-3 game into the fourth.
It would be a clean inning for both sides in the fourth including Campbell recording two more strikeouts to her tally.
With the game tied 3-3 entering the top of the fifth, Call opened the frame with a single through the left side before Denino advanced Call to second with a sac bunt. Denino's sac bunt would be quickly rewarded as Campbell delivered the game-winning run with a RBI single through the right side scoring Call as Queens reclaimed a 4-3 lead after the top of the fifth inning.
Over the final three Wayne State innings, Campbell and her defense would hold the home side and their tying run on base as the Murrieta native recorded four more strikeouts to finish with a season-best 10 punchouts to earn the Knights and her third win of the year.
