Queens came out firing to open the match, jumping to an early 3-0 lead and forcing an Adelphi timeout.
The brief break helped the Panthers settle in, responding with a 5-3 run to pull within one at 6-5. However, the tandem of Conrad and White quickly regained control, combining for four kills during a 6-0 surge that stretched the Knights' advantage to 12-5 and prompted Adelphi to use its final timeout of the set.
Riding that early momentum, the Knights' offense dominated the frame, hitting an impressive .560 with 15 kills on just one error to take a 25-15 first-set victory. Conrad and White powered the attack, combining for 11 kills in the opening set to give Queens a 1-0 match lead.
The second set turned into an old-school back-and-forth battle, featuring nine ties and three lead changes.
Adelphi opened the frame with a 3-1 lead, but Queens quickly answered as Conrad and senior middle blocker
Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, Fla) fueled a 4-0 run to give the Knights a 5-3 advantage.
Just as the Panthers tied the set at 5-5, Queens responded with a 7-2 run as they took a 12-7 lead.
After the Panthers evened the score at 5-5, Queens responded once again, this time with a 7-2 surge to take a 12-7 lead. Adelphi chipped away, pulling within 15-13, but a block and kill from senior middle blocker
Maya Angelova (Kyustendil, Bulgaria) and a service ace from setter
Jayna Marie Lorenzo (Rodeo, CA) helped the Knights rebuild their cushion to 18-13.
The Panthers mounted another rally, using a 4-0 run to close the gap to 18-17, before a kill from White and a block from Osterhoudt gave Queens a 21-18 edge. Adelphi refused to back down, however, tying the set at 21-21 with three straight points.
Queens pushed back once more, as White and Osterhoudt combined for a 3-1 spurt to reach set point at 24-22, but Adelphi staved off defeat with back-to-back points to knot the score at 24-all.
Conrad continued to power the Knights' attack with three clutch kills late in the frame, keeping Queens within striking distance, but the Panthers ultimately prevailed, taking the set 30-28 to even the match at 1-1.
Looking to respond, the Knights opened the third set strong, taking an early 7-5 lead. However, the Panthers seized momentum with a dominant 8-0 run to move in front 13-7.
Queens tried to rally as Conrad notched back-to-back kills to cut the deficit to 16-11, but the early surge by Adelphi proved too much to overcome. The Panthers maintained control the rest of the way, closing out the set 25-15 to take a 2-1 match lead.
Looking to force a decisive fifth set, the Knights went down fighting in a tightly contested fourth frame that featured six ties and two lead changes.
It was another back-and-forth battle early, as Queens continued to answer every Adelphi run. With the set knotted at 7-7, the Panthers created some separation with a 5-1 run to take a 12-8 lead.
Queens fought back to get within 12-10, but a 5-0 surge from the visitors extended the deficit to 17-10. Despite the Knights' efforts to rally, Adelphi held firm down the stretch, closing out the set 25-17 to secure the 3-1 match victory Thursday evening.
