Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Women’s Volleyball Opens 2024 Campaign with a 4-0 Weekend in Connecticut

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Queens College women's volleyball team opened the new year with four matches in two days inside Pelz Gym hosted by the Southern Connecticut State University Owls.

On Friday evening for the season opener, the Knights matched up against the Goldey-Beacom College Lightning. After dropping the first set, Queens battled back to earn a 3-1 set victory over the Lightning. In the nightcap, Queens matched up against a tough University of Bridgeport Purple Knights side in a battle of the Knights. It would be a back-and-forth five-setter affair against the Purple Knights but Queens would end the first day in New Haven with a 2-0 record as they earned a 3-2 victory.

On day two in New Haven Queens opened the day earning their first sweep of the year as they defeated host Southern Connecticut State University Owls to the final score of 3-0. In their final match of the weekend, the Knights matched up against the Eagles of Post University. The Knights would take the first set before the Eagles took a 2-1 match advantage before Queens dug deep to earn their second five-set victory of the year with a 3-2 victory over Post.

For the first time under fifth-year head coach Stefan Leger, the Knights begin the season with a 4-0 record. It is also the first 4-0 start to the season since the 2014 season.

Coach Stefan Leger's Quote on the 4-0 Start:

"I'm excited to have started this season by winning all four matches. Whenever a season begins, there are questions about a team's ability to execute game plans and adapt to opposition teams doing things we haven't yet worked on in practice, but this team has eased many of my concerns by the way they carried themselves in these difficult matchups. Each opponent had various ways to hurt us and we were able to withstand the tests from them all. I loved seeing the resilience to win two five-set matches in two days. The way this group of athletes has gelled so quickly and been able to convert the instructions from the coaching staff before turning around and dominating plays has been a pleasure to watch. While there is plenty to work on, I am positive this squad will rise to every challenge ahead."
