Game Day Preview: Homestand Continues as Softball Gets Set for Six Home Games on the Weekend

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Following a rain-affected Wednesday doubleheader the Queens College softball team gets set for six home games in a row as they welcome two East Coast Conference opponents and one non-conference foe.
 
The Knights open with an ECC DH on Friday (Apr. 19) afternoon as they conclude their series against the Dolphins of College of Staten Island before hosting a non-conference DH against the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday (Apr. 20) afternoon.
 
The weekend concludes with an ECC DH against the Lions of Molloy University on Sunday (Apr. 21) afternoon.

Scouting the Knights (11-19 Overall, 5-5 ECC Record)

  • Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights head into Friday's DH with an overall record of 11-19 and 5-5 in conference play.
    • The Knights are in third place in the conference standings with an overall record of 5-5 with 10 games left to play.
  • Freshman utility Caylea Campbell (Murrieta, CA) leads the way on both sides of the field as the rookie holds a team-high .421 batting average with 21 hits, 11 doubles, three four runs, 12 runs scored, 11 walks to go with 21 RBI.
    • In the circle, the rookie has recorded a team-high eight wins in 105.0 innings allowing 127 hits, 54 earned runs, 41 walks, and has struck out 72 batters with an ERA of 3.60.
  • Campbell has been named to the ECC Weekly Report Sheet on six separate occasions.

  • While senior first baseman Jenny Murphy (East Islip, N.Y.) is having an excellent year to cap off her Knights career batting .289 with 26 hits, one double, four home runs, three walks, and 11 runs scored to go with 20 RBI on the year.

College of Staten Island Dolphins Preview (12-26 Overall, 4-8 ECC Record)

Last Win: 7-3 (A, 3/30/24)
Last Loss: 0-2 (A, 3/30/24)
  • Staten Island enters the week with an overall record of 12-26 and 4-8 in ECC play.
  • The Knights lead the overall series 9-5 and earned a DH split earlier this week by winning the nightcap in Staten Island back on March 30.
    • In Flushing Queens is 4-2 against the Dolphins and will be looking to clinch their third straight ECC series against the Dolphins.
  • Olivia Wanser leads the team with an overall batting average of .405 with 49 hits, 15 doubles, three home runs, 13 walks, 21 runs scored, and 35 RBI.
  • While Aileen Balderas is batting .400 with 54 hits, 15 doubles, one triple, four home runs, four walks, 21 RBI, and 36 runs scored.
  • In the circle, Kennedie Ruth leads the team with seven wins having pitched 91.2 innings allowing 103 hits, 55 earned runs, 43 walks, and 45 strikeouts.

Southern Connecticut State University Preview (11-19 Overall)

Last Win: 2-0 (H, 3/20/14)
Last Loss: 1-7 (A, 4/4/15)
  • Southern Connecticut State enters Flushing on Saturday with an overall record of 11-19.
  • It will be the first meeting against the Owls since the 2015 season when the Knights fell on the road. It is the first meeting in Flushing since the 2014 season when Queens earned the DH sweep.
  • Rachel Miller leads the team with a batting average of .319 with 29 hits, seven doubles, one triple, two walks, 10 runs scored, and 16 RBI.
  • While Gabriella Festa is batting .309 with 25 hits, four doubles, one home run, six walks, 12 runs scored, and 14 RBI.
  • In the circle, Jessica Perucki leads the Owls with a team-high seven wins and one save in 84.1 innings pitched allowing 50 hits, eight earned runs, 10 walks, and has struck out 79 batters.

Molloy University Lions Preview (21-15 overall, 9-1 ECC)

Last Win: 9-0 (A, 5/3/23)
Last Loss: 3-7 (A, 5/5/23)
  • Molloy enters the week with an overall record of 21-15 and 9-1 in ECC play and will host the Dolphins on Saturday before traveling to Flushing on Sunday.
  • The Knights trail the overall series 25-48-1. Last season the Knights went 1-3 against the Lions in ECC play but upset them in the first round of the ECC tournament before the Lions eliminated the Knights to advance to the ECC final  
  • Queens is looking for their first series victory over the Lions since the 2018 season when the Knights took the series 3-1 with a sweep at home before earning a split in Rockville Centre.
  • Chrissie Huhn leads the Lions with a team-high batting average of .435 with 54 hits, eight doubles, two triples, one home run, seven walks, 32 runs scored, and 22 RBI.
  • While Alex Burns is batting .375 with 42 hits, nine doubles, two triples, six home runs, 11 walks, 23 runs scored, and 36 RBI.
  • In the circle, Sophia Mariottini leads the Lions with 11 wins in 116.2 innings pitched allowing 117 hits, 40 earned runs, 15 walks, and has struck out 84 batters.

Next Pitch

The Knights conclude the ECC series against the Lions on Tuesday (Apr. 23) afternoon with a trip to Rockville Centre. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
