ERIE, PA. – Looking to conclude their road trip on a high note, the Queens College men's tennis team made a stop in Erie, PA with a non-conference match against the Fighting Scots of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on Sunday.
The Knights would trail 1-0 after doubles play but would rally in singles play as they took five matches to earn the victory to the final score of 5-2.
With the win, the Knights improved to 9-6 overall on the year.
Doubles
It would be tough going in the doubles action as the #2 pair of senior
Omar El Shehawey (Cairo, Egypt) and sophomore
Lucas Foix Sotos (Javea, Spain) fell to Gordan Mileusnic and Fabricio Pans to the score of 6-3.
Edinboro would clinch the doubles point as the #1 doubles pair of senior
Roni Rikkonen (Tampere, Finland) and junior
Cameron Henricy (Las Palmas, Spain) fell 6-3 against Bruno Sabio and Rocco Palombarini.
The home side would complete the doubles sweep as the #3 pair of senior
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina) and freshman
Tim Andersson (Linkoping, Sweden) fell to Stanislas Noel and Thibault Dorval to the score of 6-3.
Singles
Needing to rally Rikkonen at #1 singles defeated Sabio in straight sets to the score of 6-3, 6-2 to tie the match at 1-1.
Foix Sotos would put the Knights up 2-1 with a two-set victory over Dorval to the score of 7-5, 6-3 at #5 singles.
At #4 singles El Shehawey would put the Knights one singles victory away from clinching the match as he defeated Thomas Buchard to the score of 6-4, 7-6
(7-0) as Queens took a 3-1 lead.
Edinboro would cut into the Knights' advantage at #2 singles as rookie Andersson fell in a tough three-set loss to Mileusnic to the score of 2-6, 6-4, 4-6.
But freshman
Noah Gauthier (La Colle-sur-Loup, France) would clinch the match for the Knights with a three-set victory to the score of 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 over Gustavo Martins at #6 singles.
Henricy would earn the Knights their fifth point of the day with a three-set comeback victory at #3 singles as he defeated Noel to the score of 3-6, 7-6
(7-4), 6-3 to complete the road stand.
Next Serve
Short rest for the Knights as they open a three-match homestand beginning on Monday (Apr. 15) afternoon as the Griffins of Chestnut Hill College come to town. First serve is set for noon.
