FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing East Regional play, the Queens College women's tennis team matched up against nationally-ranked #34 Wilmington University Wildcats at Delcastle Tennis Center Saturday afternoon.
On Wednesday (Mar. 27) the Knights moved up two spots as they found themselves ranked #28 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tennis Ranking.
As the Knights earned the crucial doubles points, both sides would split the singles action as junior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) clinched the match at #5 singles to give Queens a 4-3 regional victory over the Wildcats.
With the win, the Knights improved their record to 11-3 overall on the year.
Doubles Play
Queens began the match on the back foot as the #3 pair of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) & senior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) fell to Alva Norberg and Marley Trifunovic to the score of 0-6.
Queens would rally as the #2 pair of graduate student
Eva Rivoal (Saint Denis de Pile, France) and sophomore
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) defeated Jess Purdy and Larize Nel to the score of 6-2 to tie the doubles match at 1-1.
With the match tied at 1-1, it would be back and forth battle at #1 doubles between the nationally ranked #33 pair of senior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) against Valentina Ivankovic and Fenna Swann. But it would be the Knights pair who would emerge victorious to the score of 7-5 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Singles Play
Having taken the 1-0 lead, Makal would put the Knights up 2-0 earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Norberg at #2 singles.
The Wildcats would cut the advantage down to 2-1 as Hany-Fawzy fell to Ivankovic at #3 singles to the score of 4-6, 4-6 before the Wildcats tied the match at 2-2 as Rivoal fell to Purdy at #1 singles to the score of a 6-7
(5-7), 3-6.
But Lamy at #4 singles would put the Knights up 3-2 with a three-set victory over Kushi Khandoji to the score of 7-6
(7-5), 4-6, 6-2.
However, the Wildcats would tie the match 3-3 as graduate student
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) fell at #6 court against Nel to the score of 4-6, 2-6.
Down to the final singles match at #5 between Berggren and Trifunovic, the junior would drop the first set to the score of 2-6 before earning a comeback victory to the score of 6-4, 6-1 as Queens earned a crucial East Regional victory Saturday afternoon.
NEXT MATCH
The Knights open a three-match homestand beginning on Thursday (Apr. 4) afternoon as they welcome the Eagles of Post University to town. First serve is set for noon.
