Nationally Ranked #26 Women’s Tennis Sweeps #50 Adelphi Thursday Afternoon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Continuing East Regional play Thursday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team matched up against nationally-ranked #50 Adelphi University Panthers inside the QC Tennis Bubble.

On Wednesday (Apr. 10) the Knights moved up two spots as they found themselves ranked #26 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tennis Ranking.

With the Panthers short of a player, the Knights began the match with a 1-0 lead and needing one doubles point to take a 2-0 lead, Queens would earn the doubles victory at #2 court before sweeping the five singles matches to earn the 7-0 match victory over the Panthers.

With the win, the Knights improved their record to 12-3 overall on the year.

Doubles Play

With no action at the #3 court, the Knights began the match with a 1-0 lead in doubles play as the Knights needed one doubles match to take a 2-0 lead into singles play.

It would be a battle at #1 doubles between two nationally ranked pairs as the #35 pair of senior Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) matched up against #25 Panthers pair of Katarina Liedbeck and Roisin Boyd. With the Knights pairing leading 3-0, the Panthers would come back to tie the doubles action at 1-1 as Makal and Berggren fell to the score of 6-4.

While in the #2 doubles action between graduate student Eva Rivoal (Saint Denis de Pile, France) and sophomore Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) against Astrid Bergh and Caterina Federici, the Knights pair would need to rally as they trailed 4-1. But the Queens duo would dig deep as they rallied with five straight points to earn a 6-4 victory and take a 2-0 lead into singles play.

Singles Play

Leading 2-0 Lamy would defeat Federici at #4 singles to the score of 6-1, 6-0 in a convincing two-set victory to put the Knights up 3-0.

Queens would clinch the match as Rivoal defeated Liedeck at #1 singles to the score of 6-1, 6-0.

Leading 4-0, Berggren at #5 singles would earn a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Chaves to put the Knights up 5-0.

Makal at #2 singles would defeat Boyd to the score of 6-1, 7-5 before junior Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) completed the sweep at #3 singles over Bergh. Hany-Fawzy would take the first set to the score of 6-4, but in the second set, the junior would trail 5-2 before rallying with five straight points to earn the two-set victory to the final score of 7-5 as Queens completed a 7-0 sweep over the Panthers.
