FLUSHING, N.Y. – Returning to East Regional play Friday afternoon, the Queens College women's tennis team welcomed the Rams of Thomas Jefferson University to town.
On Monday (Mar. 20) the Knights were ranked nationally for the first time this year at the #30 spot in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Tennis Ranking matched up against a tough Jefferson squad to earn a convincing 7-0 victory over the Rams inside the QC Tennis Bubble.
With the win, the Knights improved their record to 10-3 overall on the year.
Doubles Play
Looking for a good start the nationally ranked #30 pair of senior
Maja Makal (Bialystok, Poland) and junior
Saga Berggren (Uddevalla, Sweden) earned a 6-2 victory over Nicole Hrbkova and Noelle Frenzel at the #1 court for an early lead of 1-0.
Queens would take the doubles point as the #2 pair of graduate student
Eva Rivoal (Saint Denis de Pile, France) and sophomore
Apolline Lamy (Toulouse, France) defeated Manni Zhang and Charly Egger to the score of 6-1 to take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
The Knights would complete the doubles sweep as the #3 pair of junior
Caroline Hany-Fawzy (Alexandria, Egypt) & senior
Ana Tarbujaru (Valcea, Romania) earned a 6-2 victory over Emily Frost and Stanislava Norets.
Singles Play
Having taken the 1-0 lead, Queens would sweep all of the singles action.
Graduate student
Kyra Bergmann (Forest Hills, N.Y.) would put the Knights up 2-0 as the Forest Hills native earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Norets at #6 court.
The lead would grow to 3-0 as Berggren earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zenia Barretto at the #5 court.
Queens would clinch the match at #1 singles with Rivoal having earned a 6-2 first set victory before Frenzel retired hurt giving the Knights the match.
Fawzy at #3 singles earned a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Egger before Lamy earned a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Zhang at #4 singles.
At the #2 singles Makal would earn a hard fought three-set victory over Hrbkova. The senior took the first set with a convincing 6-0 victory before Hrbkova took the second set to the score of 7-5. But Makal would complete the Friday afternoon sweep with a 10-6 third set victory as the Knights earned their 10
th victory of the year.
NEXT MATCH
The Knights hit the road for the first time this spring on Sunday (Mar. 31) afternoon as they travel to Wilmington, Del. with a matchup against the Wildcats of Wilmington University. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m.
