Edney-Holmes Career-High 29 Points Paces Women’s Basketball to Series Sweep over Roberts Wesleyan Friday Evening

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Opening a four-game road trip beginning in Rochester the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University inside the Voller Athletic Center Friday Evening in East Coast Conference play.
 
In a game that saw four ties and five lead changes, the Knights were led by four players who scored in double figures with junior Amiyah Edney-Holmes (Philadelphia, PA) leading the way with a career-high 29 points and rookie Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) notching 27 points, while sophomore Gianna Henriques (Bronx, N.Y.) recorded her third double-double of the year with 11 points and 15 rebounds and sophomore Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) notched 11 points as Queens earned a 87-74 victory over the Redhawks.
 
With the win, the Knights earned their seventh victory of the year and third in ECC play. Friday's win over Roberts Wesleyan earns Queens their first series sweep since the 2016-17 season and their first road victory inside Voller Athletic Center since the 2017-18 season.

Game Recap

It was a back-and-forth affair to start the contest as both teams matched each other bucket for bucket. With the Knights leading 10-9 at the 5:04 mark, the Redhawks would tally a 5-0 run to take a 14-10 lead with 3:48 left in the first quarter.
 
But Queens would waste no time answering as they tallied a 15-4 run to end the first quarter
with Awaka recording nine points in the run as Queens took a 25-18 advantage into the second quarter.
 
Both sides traded buckets to open the second quarter with Roberts Wesleyan cutting the Knights' advantage down to four points, 31-27 with 6:16 left until halftime.
 
Seeing their advantage cut down to four points, Edney-Holmes would go on a personal 8-0 run from the 5:07 mark to the 4:09 mark as Queens took their first double-digit lead of the night for a 39-27 lead.
 
But the Redhawks responded with an 8-3 run to bring the score line to 42-35 before the Knights finished the final 1:34 of the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 13 point lead of 48-35 into the locker rooms at halftime.
 
Queens opened the third quarter on a three-pointer from rookie Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) as the Knights extended their advantage to 16 points, 51-35 the largest lead of the night at that point with 9:42 to go.
 
With the Knights holding a 57-41 lead with 6:30 to go in the stanza, the Redhawks would attempt a comeback rally with a 15-3 run from the 6:17 mark to the 2:25 mark as the home side brought the visitors advantage down to four points, 60-54.
 
But the Knights would quickly get back into their groove as they ended the final 2:10 of the third quarter on an 8-1 run to extend their lead back to double-digits for a 68-57 advantage heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
 
Once again both sides traded baskets but with the Knights leading by eight points, 70-62, Edney-Holmes and Awaka would combine for 11 runs as Queens went on an 11-0 run from the 7:35 mark to the 4:28 mark for an 81-62 lead, a 19 point advantage, the largest lead of the night to seal the victory and complete the series sweep to the final score of 87-74.

By the Numbers

  • Edney-Holmes recorded a career-high 29 points (12-of-24 FG, 3-of-8 3PT, 2-of-6 FT) to go with four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
  • It would be a near double-double for Awaka who recorded 27 points (10-of-14 FG, 7-of-11 FT) to go with nine rebounds, four steals (tying a career-high), and two assists.
  • Davis recorded 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block, and one steal on the evening.
  • Henriques recorded her third double-double of the year with a career-high 11 points (5-of-8 FG, 1-of-2 FT), and tied a career-high 15 rebounds on the evening.
    • For the straight second game and third time this year the sophomore recorded 15 rebounds in a single game.
  • As a team, the Knights shot 46.5% as they went 33-71 from the field, while the Redhawks shot 47.0% on 31-66 from the field.
    • The Knights held a rebounding margin of 45-30 with an 18-12 advantage on second-chance points.
    • Queens forced 18 Roberts Wesleyan turnovers into 20 points.

The Knights continue the road stand as they travel to Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. on Wednesday (Feb. 21) evening against the Mavericks of Mercy University. Tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
