DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Continuing their four-game road trip the Queens College women's basketball team matched up against the Mavericks of Mercy University inside the Neil Judge Student Athlete Center Wednesday Evening in East Coast Conference play.

After a slow start for both teams, rookie
Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) and sophomore
Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied back-to-back baskets to put the Knights up 4-0 with 6:28 left in the first quarter.
The Mavericks would respond with a 7-0 run to take a 7-4 lead before a layup from Abrams brought the Knights within one, 7-6 with 4:22 to go. But Mercy would end the first quarter on a 10-1 run as they took a 17-7 lead into the second quarter.
As the Mavericks opened the second quarter to extend their lead to 12 points, 19-7, rookie
Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) and Abrams would record back-to-back buckets to get the Knights within eight points, 19-11 with 7:40 to go until halftime.
But the Mavericks would shoot 46.0% in the second quarter compared to the Knights' 27.7% as the home side took a 33-18 lead at halftime.
However, the shooting struggles would continue in the second half of the game as the home side kept their advantage in double-digit throughout the third and fourth quarter to defeat the Knights to the final score of 67-50 Wednesday evening.
By the Numbers
- Abrams led the Knights' offense with a game-high 24 points (9-of-24 FG, 4-of-11 3PT, 2-of-2 FT) to go with five rebounds, two steals and two assists on the evening.
- Davis recorded eight points (3-of-8 FG, 1-of-1 3PT, 1-of-1 FT) with five rebounds, four assists, one block and one steal.
- Awaka tallied seven points (3-of-4 FG, 1-of-4 FT) with seven rebounds, and one steal on the night.
- As a team, the Knights were held to 37.7% as they went 20-53 from the field, while the Mavericks shot 49.1% on 27-55 from the field.
- The Knights held a rebounding margin of 33-30 with a 10-6 advantage on second-chance points.

The Knights head to Sparkill, N.Y. on Saturday (Feb. 24) afternoon as they match up against the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
