Heartbreak in West Chester as Women’s Volleyball Falls in Five Sets Saturday Afternoon

WEST CHESTER, PA. – Opening a back-to-back non-conference road stand beginning in West Chester, the Queens College women's volleyball team matched up against the Golden Rams of West Chester University inside Hollinger Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon.
 
Three Knights recorded double-digit kills led by rookie Madi Hathaway's (Edmond, OK) team-high 14 kills, while junior Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FLA) tied a season-high 11 kills and senior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) notched 10 kills, but it would be a heartbreaking loss as the Knights fell in five sets to the Golden Rams.
 
With the loss, the Knights moved to 16-6 overall on the year.

MATCH RECAP vs. West Chester University (L, 2-3 | Set Scores: 21-25, 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 11-15)

Queens opened the first set with a 2-1 lead before the home side went on a 9-2 run to take a 10-4 advantage.
 
The Knights would take five of the next 11 points as they were able to cut their deficit down to 13-9 but West Chester responded with a 6-2 run to extend their lead to 19-11.
 
But Queens would not go down without a fight as they answered back a 9-3 run to get within two points, 22-20. However, it would be the home side that took the first set to the score of 25-21 and a 1-0 match lead.
 
In the second set, West Chester took six of the first 10 points for a 6-4 advantage before rookie Jonaida Donowa (Porter, TX) recorded two kills in a 7-1 run as Queens took an 11-7 lead.
 
But the Golden Rams answered with an 11-5 run as they took an 18-16 lead. However, for the second straight set, the Knights would not go down without a fight as junior Maya Angelova's (Kyustendil, Bulgaria) kill started a final run of 9-1 as Queens tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 second set victory.
 
In the third set, the Golden Rams led 10-7 before two errors from the home team and back-to-back kills from senior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain) and Franco put the Knights up 11-10.
 
But with the Knights committing their own errors, West Chester would go on a 7-2 run to take a 17-13 advantage.
 
The Knights quickly responded as they were led by the trio of Donowa, Osterhoudt, and Hathaway in a 5-1 run to tie the set at 18-18.
 
West Chester answered that run with a 4-2 run of their own to take a 22-20 lead before a Golden Rams service error started a final 5-0 run with the duo of Donowa and Angelova recording a block and a kill apiece to earn a 25-22 comeback victory and take a 2-1 match lead.
In the fourth set, the Knights fell behind 11-6 and would cut their deficit down to one point 16-15, but the Golden Rams would earn a 25-21 fourth set victory and tie the match at 2-2 forcing the deciding fifth set.
 
In the deciding fifth set, both teams would trade the first 10 points and with the set tied at 5-5, West Chester would use an 8-2 run to take a 13-7 lead and inch two points closer to clinching the match.
 
As the Knights got within three, 14-11, the Golden Rams' eighth kill of the fifth set would earn them the victory over Queens to the final score of 15-11 and a 3-2 match victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Rookie Hathaway paced the Knights offense with her sixth triple-double of the year recording a team-high 14 kills to go with 16 assists and 12 digs.
  • Junior Osterhoudt tied a season-high 11 kills performance on a hitting % of .308 to go with three blocks.
  • Senior Franco recorded her seventh double-double of the year with 10 kills and 17 digs.
  • Rookie Donowa recorded nine kills, four blocks, two digs, and one service ace.
  • Junior Angelova recorded four kills and three blocks in the match.
  • Rookie Sophie Schonauer (Bakersfield, CA) tallied three kills and notched a career-best 15 digs performance.
  • Senior Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) recorded her fifth double-double of the year with 25 assists and 10 digs.
  • Junior Sarah Munn (Torrance, CA) notched 16 digs, eight assists, and one service ace in the match.

NEXT MATCH

The Knights conclude the non-conference portion of their schedule on Thursday, Oct. 31 with a trip to West Haven, CT against the Chargers of University of New Haven. The first serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
