Dilday Leads Softball to Victory over Alderson Broaddus Friday Afternoon

DAYTONA BEACH, FLA. – Continuing their Florida swing, the Queens College softball team matched up against Alderson Broaddus University Battlers and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Eagles in a Friday afternoon doubleheader hosted by the Eagles.

The Knights matched up against the Battlers for the first time since the 2013 season, while facing the Eagles for the first time in program history.

Behind graduate student Allyson Dilday (Castle Rock, CO.) complete inning effort in the circle, and four Knights tallying in multi-hits led by sophomore Amanda Baez (Selden, N.Y.) (2-4 AB, R), senior Cyarra Alvarado (Coral Springs, FL) (2-4 AB, 2B, RBI, 2R), junior Jenny Murphy (East Islip, N.Y.) (2-3 AB, R), and sophomore Emma Zumpol (Patchogue, N.Y.) (2-3 AB), the Knights would complete a 1-0 deficit to defeat the Battlers 4-1 for their first victory of the season.

Friday's win over the Battlers saw the Knights earn their first victory over the non-regional opponent in program history.

While playing against the Eagles, the Knights would be limited to two hits to earn a Friday afternoon split falling 8-0 in the nightcap.

Playing as the visitors, it was the home team on the scoreboard in the Battlers that would take an early 1-0 lead on a two-out rally after one complete inning of play.

After the Battlers for the first out to begin the top of the second, Murphy would single to left field before junior Kristian Verruso (Whitestone, N.Y.) reached on fielder choice but an error would keep Murphy safe at second.

The Knights would advance Murphy and Verruso into scoring position as sophomore Jillian Cosme (Franklin Square, N.Y.) delivered with a sac bunt. A wild pitch would allow Murphy to score from third to tie the game 1-1 before Alderson Broaddus got out of the inning without any further damage.

As Dilday worked a clean inning in the bottom of the second, the Knights responded in the top of the third.

With one out, Baez would single up the middle before Alvarado delivered with a RBI double to left field to score Baez for a 2-1 lead. The home side would get the second out and looked to be one out away from keeping the damage to one run.

But senior Ann Grimshaw (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) (1-4 AB, 2B, RBI) would produce the second run of the inning with their second double of the outing to left field to score Alvarado as Queens took a commanding 3-1 lead after 2 and a half innings of play.

With Dilday now settled in, the graduate student would limit the Battlers to two hit over the next five innings as the Knights continued to stay ahead.

Queens would increase their advantage to 4-1 in the top of the seventh before Dilday shut out the door in the bottom of the seventh to earn her and the Knights' first victory of the season.

In the nightcap, Queens' offense would be limited to two hits as they were unable to respond to an early 4-0 deficit after the first inning of play against the Eagles.

UP NEXT: Head coach Amy Delmore and the Knights complete the Florida trip Saturday (Mar. 11) afternoon as they match up against Hillsdale College Chargers at 2:00 p.m. before matching up against host Eagles to complete the trip at 7:00 p.m.
