Game Preview: Men’s Basketball Continues Conference Road Stand at Staten Island

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team concludes their two-game East Coast Conference road stand as the Knights travel to Staten Island with a matchup against the College of Staten Island Dolphins Wednesday (Feb. 8) evening at the Sports & Recreation Center.

Series Notes:
  • It will be the second meeting of the season and fourth overall with the Knights leading the series 2-1. 
  • Queens are looking to sweep the season series against the Dolphins having won the first meeting 84-72 at home on Jan. 11. 
  • The Knights earned a 79-65 road victory last season to earn the series split. 
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens enter the second week of February with a 7-15 overall record and 4-7 in East Coast Conference play.
    • The Knights are coming off a 0-2 week having fallen to Dominican in non-conference play before dropping a double-overtime loss to Molloy on the road. 
    • In the conference standing, Queens is in seventh place behind Staten Island who currently holds the sixth and final spot to the conference tournament. 
    • Holding the home victory over Staten Island, a season series sweep of the Dolphins will give the Knights the tiebreaker over their CUNY foes. 
  • In 22 games, Queens is averaging 69.8 points on 40.6% shooting and are averaging 42.1 rebounds and 12.4 assists per game.
  • Senior William Ellis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is averaging 12.3 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
    • Ellis notched a season-high 22 points in the victory over Holy Family on Nov. 19.
  • Senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) is averaging 11.4 points and 12.9 rebounds per game in 11 conference games.
    • The senior has tallied eight double-doubles on the season.
    • Carey is coming off a 9-point and 20-rebound performance over Molloy on Feb. 4
      • Carey has recorded two 20 rebounds performances in a single game this season.   
    • Carey earned his third ECC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Jan. 30 (Link)
    • On Tuesday (Jan. 24) Carey earned his second MBWA Honorable Mention of the season (Link)
  • Sophomore Shamar Chester (Queens, N.Y.) is averaging 10.4 points per game.
    • The sophomore notched a career-high 21 points against Daemen on Sunday.
Scouting the Dolphins
  • Staten Island is 7-15 overall and 5-7 in ECC play.
    • The Dolphins are coming off a 1-1 weekend having fallen to Daemen before earning the victory over D'Youville in Buffalo. 
    • Currently, Staten Island holds the sixth and final spot to the ECC Postseason Tournament. 
    • A win over Queens will give the Dolphins the tiebreaker as they defeated Molloy who sit second in the conference standing back on Jan. 14.
  • In 22 games, The Dolphins are averaging 72.8 points on 42.7% shooting, 36.0 rebounds, and 15.0 assists per game. 
  • Messiah Mallory leads the offense averaging 16.0 points per game.
    • Mallory tallied a season-high 29 points against the District of Columbia.
  • Bryce Waterman is averaging 13.7 points per game. 
    • Waterman recorded a season-high 26 points against Franklin Pierce on Jan. 17.
Next Jump Ball
  • Head coach Matt Collier and the Knights return home on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon as the Knights welcome the Firebirds of the University of the District of Columbia to Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Tip-off set for 1:30 p.m.
