Game Day Preview: Men’s Basketball Looking to Earn Final Spot in ECC Tournament in Final Week

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team concludes the 2022-2023 regular season in two key East Coast Conferences games.
 
The week begins in Sparkill, N.Y. on Wednesday (Feb. 22) evening as the Knights travel to Saint Thomas Aquinas College Spartans before ending the regular season at home on Saturday (Feb. 25) afternoon against the Mavericks of Mercy College. 
 
Prior to beginning the home finale, the Knights will honor their graduating seniors William Ellis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) in their annual senior day ceremony. 
 
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens enters the week with a 7-19 overall record and 4-10 in East Coast Conference play.
    • The Knights are looking to end a seven-game losing streak and are coming off losses to Wilmington and Roberts Wesleyan.
    • In the conference standing, Queens is in seventh place behind Staten Island.
    • The Knights will need to go 2-0 on the week and hope Staten Island lose their game to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon.
  • In 26 games, Queens is averaging 70.4 points on 40.9% shooting and are averaging 41.5 rebounds and 12.5 assists per game.
  • Sophomore Sunnie Diamond (Hiram, GA) leads the offense averaging 16.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
    • Diamond has recorded two 24-point scoring efforts this season, both coming against CSI and a total of five 20-point scoring efforts this season.
    • Diamond recorded the Knights first triple-double of the season in the victory over Alliance and the first triple-double since the 15-16 season. 
    • Diamond is one of six players nationally to record a triple-double this season.
    • On Monday (Feb. 20) Diamond was placed on the ECC Honor Roll sheet for the sixth time this season. (11/14, 11/28, 12/5, 1/17, 2/13, 2/20)
  • Senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) is averaging 10.7 points and 9.2 rebounds per game this season.
    • The senior has tallied eight double-doubles on the season.
    • Carey has recorded two 20 rebounds performances in a single game this season.   
    • Carey earned his third ECC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Jan. 30 (Link)
    • On Tuesday (Jan. 24) Carey earned his second MBWA Honorable Mention of the season (Link)

Scouting the Spartans
  • STAC enters the week with an overall record of 22-4 and 13-1 in ECC play.
    • The Spartans are coming off a 1-1 week as they suffered their ECC loss of the season to Daemen before defeating D'Youville to end their Buffalo trip with a victory.
  • In 26 games, The Spartans are averaging 85.4 points on 44.2% shooting, 41.5 rebounds, and 13.4 assists per game. 
  • James Patterson leads the offense averaging 14.4 points per game.
    • Patterson tallied a season-high 27 points against Lincoln (PA) on Saturday (Nov. 19) afternoon.
  • DeVante Jamison is averaging 14.3 points per game.
    • Jamison has matched a season-high 23 points on two occasions this season.

  • The Knights have lost their last two home games against the Mavericks.
Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy enters the week with an overall record of 5-19 and 2-12 in ECC play.
    • The Mavericks are coming off a 1-1 week having defeated D'Youville before losing to Daemen to end the Buffalo swing.
    • Mercy will host Molloy on Wednesday evening before traveling to Flushing to conclude the 22-23 season.
  • In 24 games, The Mavericks are averaging 72.1 points on 41.2% shooting, 39.3 rebounds, and 13.5 assists per game. 
  • Sean Smith Jr. leads the offense averaging 15.5 points per game.
    • Smith Jr. recorded a season-high 30 points against the District of Columbia on Jan. 28.
  • Jayden Dewaal is averaging 11.9 points per game.
    • Dewaal notched a season-high 26 points against Roberts Wesleyan on Feb. 4
