WBB Rookie Davis Career-High 24 Points Not Enough Against Roberts Wesleyan

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Despite a career-high 24 points from freshman Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.), the Queens College women's basketball team would fall short against the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University in East Coast Conference action inside the Voller Athletic Center.

Game Recap

It was a back-and-forth game to open the first quarter as both sides exchanged leads. After the Redhawks tied the game 10-10, Davis and graduate student Raven Pitt (Valley Stream, N.Y.) would help Queens end the first quarter on an 8-5 run as the Knights took an 18-15 lead into the second quarter.

The Redhawks would open the scoring in the second quarter to cut the deficit down to one, 18-17 before a 4-2 run put the Knights up by three, 22-19 with 6:52 to go.

Both teams would go scoreless over the next 2:22 minutes of play before both sides traded buckets.

After the Redhawks trimmed the Knights lead back down to two, 24-22 with 4:13 left until halftime, Queens would end the quarter on a 4-0 run as they took a six-point lead of 28-22 into halftime.

The Knights held the home side scoreless for the final 3:01 of play as they forced four missed shots and three turnovers.

Carrying their momentum into the third quarter, Davis opened the second half with five straight points before a layup by junior Kendra McPeek (Binghamton, N.Y.) put the Knights up by 13, 35-22 with 7:33 left in the stanza.

With the Knights leading by 13, 39-26, with 6:34 to go, the Redhawks would start their rally as they went on a 10-3 run to trim Queens' lead down to six, 42-36 with 3:15 left.

Back-to-back buckets from Pitt and junior Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would help the Knights increase their lead back to 10, 46-36, but the Redhawks would end the final 1:01 of the third on a 7-2 run as Queens lead was trimmed down to five, 48-43 heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

The Knights had controlled the game for a total of 26:48 minutes of play but another fourth-quarter meltdown would derail Queens' chance of victory.

Queens went into the fourth quarter holding a five-point edge of 48-43, but a Redhawks run of 11-0 to open the fourth would swing the momentum towards the home side as they took a 54-48 lead 5:36 to go.

The Knights would be held without a field goal until the 4:36 minute of play as a jumper by sophomore Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) got Queens within four, 54-50 but a total of nine turnovers and 2-of-9 shooting from the field would give victory to the Redhawks on Saturday afternoon for the final score of 65-53.
