Game Day Preview: Men’s Basketball Welcomes Firebirds on Alumni Day

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Queens College men's basketball team returns home on Saturday (Feb. 11) afternoon as they welcome the Firebirds of the University of District of Columbia to Fitzgerald Gymnasium on Alumni Day.

Series Notes:
  • It will be the second meeting of the season and the 23rd meeting against the Firebirds with the Knights leading the series 13-9. 
  • Queens is looking to earn the series split having dropped the first meeting back on Jan 11th in Washington, D.C. 
  • The Knights are 9-1 at home against the Firebirds.
Scouting the Knights
  • Queens enter the second week of February with a 7-16 overall record and 4-8 in East Coast Conference play.
    • The Knights are looking to end a four-game losing streak and are coming off a 67-73 loss to Staten Island Wednesday evening.  
    • In the conference standing, Queens is in seventh place behind Staten Island and has fallen behind by two games. 
  • In 23 games, Queens is averaging 69.7 points on 40.7% shooting and are averaging 41.7 rebounds and 12.4 assists per game.
  • Sophomore Sunnie Diamond (Hiram, GA) leads the offense averaging 14.9 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
    • Diamond has recorded two 24-point scoring efforts this season, both coming against CSI.
    • Diamond recorded the Knights first triple-double of the season in the victory over Alliance and the first triple-double since the 15-16 season. 
    • Diamond is one of six players nationally to record a triple-double this season.
    • On Tuesday (Jan. 17) Diamond earned his fourth ECC Honor Roll (11/14, 11/28, 12/5, 1/17)
  • Senior William Ellis (Valley Stream, N.Y.) is averaging 11.4 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
    • Ellis notched a season-high 22 points in the victory over Holy Family on Nov. 19.
  • Senior Tyler Carey (Bay Shore, N.Y.) is averaging 11.2 points and 12.2 rebounds per game in 11 conference games.
    • The senior has tallied eight double-doubles on the season.
    • Carey is coming off a 9-point and 20-rebound performance over Molloy on Feb. 4
      • Carey has recorded two 20 rebounds performances in a single game this season.   
    • Carey earned his third ECC Defensive Player of the Week honor on Jan. 30 (Link)
    • On Tuesday (Jan. 24) Carey earned his second MBWA Honorable Mention of the season (Link)
Scouting the Firebirds
  • District of Columbia enters Saturday with an overall record of 9-13 and 7-6 in conference play.
    • The Firebirds are coming off an 88-71 victory over Molloy.
    • With a conference record of 7-6, the Firebirds sit in fourth place in the standings.
  • In 22 games, The Firebirds are averaging 81.3 points per game on 46.0% shooting, 37.1 rebounds, and 18.1 assists per game. 
  • Michael Aiken leads the offense averaging 15.3 points per game.
    • Aiken tallied a season-high 24 points against Bowie State.
  • Jahmir Marable-Williams is averaging 12.0 points per game.
    • Marable-Williams notched a season-high 22 points against Molloy.

  • Head coach Matt Collier and the Knights open a three-game road stand beginning with a trip to Wilmington, Del on Wednesday (Feb. 15) evening as they match up against the Wildcats of Wilmington University in non-conference play. Tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
