Career-Highs from Davis and Abrams Propel Women’s Basketball to Home Opener Victory over Bloomfield

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Sophomore guard Brianna Davis (Bronx, N.Y.)  and freshman guard Jalea Abrams (Elmira, N.Y.) combined for 45 points as the Queens College women's basketball team defeated the visiting Bears of Bloomfield College of Montclair State University inside Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

After a slow start to the first quarter and the Knights leading 6-5, Davis would lead the charge as Queens went on an 11-2 run to end the final 4:45 minutes of the first quarter to take a 17-7 lead heading into the second quarter.
 
The Bears would open the second quarter of play with an 8-2 run as they cut the Knights advantage down to 19-15 with 7:51 left until halftime.
 
After a two-minute scoreless passage of play, Davis and Abrams would start a 16-3 run to end the second quarter with Abrams knocking down two big three-pointers over the final one minute of play as Queens took a 35-18 lead into the locker rooms.
 
The Bears opened the scoring in the third quarter with a 5-0 run to cut the Knights' lead down to 35-23 before an Abrams layup put Queens back up by 14, 37-23 with 8:57 left in the third quarter.
 
Both teams would go scoreless from 8:36 to 5:56 before the rookie Abrams knocked down her third made three-pointer of the afternoon to extend the lead to 17 points, 40-23.
 
But the Bears would continue to cut into the Knights' advantage as they went on a 9-4 run as Queens' lead was cut down to 44-32 forcing a home timeout with 3:08 left in the third quarter.
 
An 8-2 run by the visitors would cut the Knights' double-digit lead down to six, 46-40 before rookie Jordis Tautalatasi (Springfield, MA) first made three-pointer of the game put the Knights back up nine, 49-40 heading into the final 10 minutes of the game.
 
Both teams would trade buckets in the early going as they matched each other bucket for bucket keeping Queens lead at nine before junior Lateisha Willis (Nottingham, England) went 1-of-2 at the free throw line to put the Knights back up by 10, 55-45 with 8:29 left in the game.
 
But a quick 5-0 run by the visitors would bring Queens advantage down to five, 55-50 with 6:59 to go.
 
However, Davis would take over the offense as she went on a 7-4 run from 6:39 to 4:40 to put the Knights back up by eight, 62-54 an advantage the Knights would not surrender as they earned their first victory of the year to the final score of 72-58 Saturday afternoon.

By the Numbers

  • Davis recorded a career-high 30 points (12-22 FG) to go with nine rebounds and five steals.
  • Rookie Abrams would notch a career-best performance with 15 points to go with seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Tautalatasi tallied a career-high nine points (4-7 FG) to go with nine assists and four rebounds.
  • Freshman Nkiru Awaka (Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied eight points (3-6 FG) combined with 11 rebounds, one block and two steals.
  • As a team, the Knights shot 42.2% as they went 27-64 from the field, while the Bears shot 29.7% going 19-64 from the field.
    • The Knights would dominate the fourth quarter of play as they shot 60.0% from the field going 9-15 while holding Bloomfield to 41.1% on 7-17 shooting as Queens outscored the visitors 23-18. 

Next Game

The Knights open a three-game road stand beginning on Tuesday (Nov. 21) evening as they travel to Caldwell, NJ with a matchup against the Cougars of Caldwell University Tip-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
