Volleyball Completes ECC Series Sweep over Roberts Wesleyan Sunday Afternoon

FLUSHING, N.Y. – Looking to bounce back after a tough five-set loss Thursday evening, the Queens College volleyball team welcomed the Redhawks of Roberts Wesleyan University to Flushing to begin the second half of East Coast Conference play.

It would be a balanced effort from the Knights' offense as they hit .263 on the afternoon to earn a 3-0 sweep (Set Scores: 25-17, 25-19, 25-20) over the Redhawks.

With the win, the Knights improved to 11-7 overall and 5-2 in ECC play.

For the second straight season head coach Stefan Leger and the Knights completed the series over the Redhawks and fourth time in program history.

Match 18 Recap (Set Scores: 25-17, 25-19, 25-20)

It was a strong start to the match as junior Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) began the first set with a service ace as Queens opened with a 6-2 run.

The Redhawks would bring Queens advantage down to four, 12-8 before a visitors service error started a 7-3 run for the Knights to take a commanding lead of 19-11.

Roberts Wesleyan would attempt to cut into the Knights' deficit but senior Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) would record a kill and a service ace to put the Knights up 23-15 before two errors from the visitors saw Queens earn a 25-17 first set victory and take a 1-0 lead.

For the second straight set, Queens used a 4-1 run to take an early lead as sophomore Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) recorded two kills.

The Redhawks would tie the second set on two separate occasions and with the set tied at 7-7, a kill from Franco would start a 7-2 run as the Knights took a 14-9 advantage.

A 4-1 from by the visitors would see Queens' lead cut down to 15-13 before another 5-1 run put Queens on the route to earning a 25-19 second set victory as Queens took a 2-0 match lead.

Looking to complete the sweep, it would be a sluggish start from the Knights as they trailed 9-3 in the early going of the third set.

But Queens would continue to battle as Franco and sophomore Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FL) combined for two kills in the 4-1 run to get within three, 10-7.

However, the Redhawks tallied three kills in their 4-1 run to extend their advantage to 14-8.

But the Knights would not go away with a fight as they rallied using a 10-2 run as junior Alicia Cervera (Valencia, Spain) recorded two service aces as Queens took a slim lead of 18-16.

As the Redhawks cut the advantage down to 18-17, a service error from the visitors would start another 5-1 run with Conrad recording three straight service aces before Queens completed the match sweep with a 25-20 third set victory and earned their fifth conference victory of the year.
