WASHINGTON, D.C. – As the road trip continued on Friday afternoon, the nationally-ranked #45 Queens College men's tennis team completed the East Coast Conference series sweep over the University of the District of Columbia Firebirds in the nation's capital at University Courts.
Queens began the afternoon up 1-0 as the Firebirds fielded five players and needed one doubles victory to take a 2-0 lead into singles play before the Knights won four singles matches to defeat the Firebirds 6-1 in ECC play.
With the win, the Knights improved to 13-7 overall, 5-0 in ECC play, while the Firebirds moved to 4-9 overall, 2-3 in conference play.
Doubles Competition
With the Firebirds only fielding five players, the Knights had a 1-0 advantage as doubles competition began.
Queens would win the doubles point as the #1 doubles duo of junior
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina ) / sophomore
Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) defeated Maksim Bahdanovich/Louis Mangeon to the score of 6-4.
The Firebirds would avoid the sweep in doubles as the #2 doubles duo of freshman
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) / senior
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (Goiania, Brazil) fell 6-4 to Mauricio Corty/Fredis Ayala.
Singles Competition
Andrade would put the Knights up 2-0 as he defeated Ayala to the score of 6-0, 4-0
(WD).
Uhde put the Knights up 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory at #4 singles over Bedforth.
Ostheimer would clinch the match for the Knights with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at #3 singles over Bahdanovich.
Given doubles duty off, senior
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) put the Knights up 5-0 as the German native defeated Corty #2 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory.
But the Firebirds would avoid the sweep as Bibiloni fell at #1 singles in a three-set match. The junior won the first set over Mangeon to the score of 6-2, before falling short as Mangeon won the last two sets to the score of 6-4, 12-10.
