FLUSHING, N.Y. – On Monday afternoon the Queens College men's tennis team continued their winning streak to five games as the Knights battled back from being down 2-1 to win 5-2 over the visiting Knights of Fairleigh Dickinson University.
With the win, Queens improves to 6-4 overall, while Fairleigh Dickinson moves to 4-8 overall.
Monday's win was the first win over a Division I opponent since the Knights swept Wagner College on March 2, 2020. The 5-2 win helped the Knights even their record against DI counterparts to 6-6 overall.
Doubles Competition
Queens fell behind early as the #3 doubles pair of junior
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina ) / Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) fell to the score of 6-3 against Justas Trainauskas / Moric Budinszky.
But #2 doubles duo of junior
Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt) / junior
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) would even the match up at 1-1 with a 6-4 victory over Arjun Sriram/Niclas Pietsch.
However, Fairleigh Dickinson clinched the double points as Queens #1 doubles duo of sophomore
Omar El Shehawey(Cairo, Egypt) / senior
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) fell to Mehdi Dhouib/Younes Adnane to the score of 6-4.
Singles Competition
Borges wasted no time tying the match up at 1-1 as he defeated Tardin to the score of 6-3, 6-2 at #5 singles before Rashad fell at #1 singles to Trainauskas to the score of 6-4, 6-1.
With the Knights trailing 2-1, Bibiloni would even the match following his two-set victory at #2 singles over Dhouib to the score of 7-5, 6-2.
Freshman
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) would put Queens in the driver's seat with a 7-5, 6-4 victory at #6 singles over Taiga Koyama.
Down to the final two matches at singles #3 and #4. At #4 singles, Shehawey won the first set to the score of 6-3 over Linley before dropping the second set to the score of 6-4.
While at #3 singles Demuth dropped the first set as he fell to Budinszky to the score of 6-1, but the Argentinian native would battle back and force a third set with a 7-5 second set victory.
Shehawey took a 3-2 lead in the third set and never looked back as he clinched the match for Queens with a 6-2 third set victory putting the home side up 4-2.
While Demuth fell behind 5-2 in the third before he stormed back to win 7-5 giving Queens a 5-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson as the Knights won their first battle of the Knights affair since the 2018 season.
