FLUSHING, N.Y. – Trialing 1-0 after the conclusion of doubles competition, the Queens College men's tennis team battled back to win five singles matches to defeat the visiting Ravens of Franklin Pierce University inside the Queens College Tennis Bubble to the final score of 5-2.
With the win, the Knights picked up their first victory of the season to improve to 1-3 overall, while the Ravens dropped to 3-3 overall on the season.
Queens stays undefeated against Franklin Pierce improving their record to 5-0 dating back to the 2004 season.
Doubles Competition
It was a sluggish start for the Knights as they quickly found themselves trailing 1-0 as the #1 doubles duo of junior
Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt) / junior
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) fell 6-2 to the Ravens #1 duo of Ivan Bernal / Kevin Denecheau.
At #2 doubles, the pair of junior
Mariano Bibiloni (La Plata, Argentina ) / sophomore
Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) would fall 6-2 to the pair of Felipe Carvalho / Preston Gordon as the Knights went down 1-0.
But the Knights senior duo of
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (Goiania, Brazil) / Julius Schulte (Dusseldorf, Germany) would pick up their first win of the season at #3 doubles as they defeated the duo of Alejandro Ortiz / Nkrumah Patrick to the score of 6-2.
Singles Competition
The Knights would find themselves trailing 2-0 as Demuth retired hurt against Bernal at #2 singles putting the Ravens up 2-0.
Queens would make quick inroads as they took a 3-2 lead following victories at Singles #4, 3, and 6.
Sophomore
Omar El Shehawey (Cairo, Egypt) would start the rally winning in straight sets as he defeated Gordon at #4 singles to the score of 6-2, 6-3. At #3 singles Bibiloni would tie the match 2-2 as he picked up a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory over Denecheau.
At #6 singles sophomore
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina) earned his second straight victory of the season as he swept Ortiz to the score of 6-2, 6-4 giving Queens a 3-2 lead.
With the Knights leading 3-2, singles action at #1 and #5 courts went into the third set tiebreaker. Rashad would clinch the match at #1 singles with a three-set victory defeating Carvalho to the score of 6-3, 1-6, 6-2, and picked up his second singles victory of the season.
While freshman
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) picked up his first victory of the season earning a three-set victory at #5 singles defeating Patrick to the score of 7-5, 5-7, 6-4, and giving Queens an overall victory of 5-2 on the afternoon.
