FLUSHING, N.Y. – Playing their second Division I opponent of the season, the Queens College men's tennis team (0-3) got off to a strong start winning the doubles points against the visiting Rams of Fordham University (4-3), but the Knights would surrender four singles matches to drop the match 4-3 Saturday evening.
Doubles Competition
The Knights got off to a quick start as the #1 doubles duo of junior
Kareem Rashad (Alexandria, Egypt) / junior
Lucas Demuth (Buenos Aires, Argentina) won their doubles match against Tom Russwurm / Jofre Segarra to the score of 6-1.
But the Rams would tie the double competition as the #3 doubles duo of Giorgio Soemarno / Aaron Ventura defeated the Knights senior duo of
Hugo Evangelista de Andrade (Goiania, Brazil) / Julius Schulte (Dusseldorf, Germany) to the score of 6-3.
But Queens went to singles competition up 1-0 as the new pair of senior
Moritz Borges (Hunxe, Germany) / freshman
Philipp Uhde (Heidelberg, Germany) defeated Juan Paredes / Nicholas Kanazirev to the score of 6-4 at #2 doubles court.
Singles Competition
The Rams would tie the match 1-1 as Segarra defeated sophomore
Tim Ostheimer (Frankfurt, Germany) at #4 singles court in straight sets to the score of 7-5, 6-1.
Queens would find themselves trailing 3-1 as Borges was defeated at #3 singles in straight sets to the score of 6-4, 6-1 against Kanazirev, and Uhde fell at #5 singles against Soemarno to the score of 6-4, 6-4.
Rashad would bring the Knights within one as he dispatched Paredes at #1 singles in straight sets to the score of 6-4, 6-4 to earn his first singles victory of the season.
At #2 singles, Demuth battled back from a first set loss of 2-6 to defeat Russwurm to the score of 6-2 before the Rams clinched the match as Russwurm emerged victorious in the third set tiebreaker to the score of 6-0.
At #6 singles sophomore
Francisco Gonzalez (La Plata, Argentina) earned a three-set victory as he defeated Ventura to the score of 6-1, 5-7, 7-6
(7-5) to earn his first victory of the season.
