FLUSHING, N.Y. – Everything clicked for the Queens College women's basketball team Monday evening in the second quarter as the Knights used an impressive 27-6 run to defeat the visiting Dolphins of College of Staten Island to the final score of 73-64 in East Coast Conference action.
How it Happened
Queens got off to a quick start in the first quarter as the Knights went up 7-2 before the Dolphins went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead down to one, 9-8 with 1:26 to go. Freshman
Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) would give the Knights an 11-8 lead going into the second quarter as they held the Dolphins without a field goal to end the quarter.
After senior
Nora Gabel (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) knocked down her second three of the game to extend the lead to six, 14-8 but the Dolphins would cut the advantage down to four, 14-10 at the 8:06 mark.
The Knights held the Dolphins scoreless from 8:06 to 1:06 as Gabel and sophomore
Aalia Carlson (Montclair, N.J.) combined for 14 points to go on a 22-0 run to take a 36-10 lead with 1:29 to go until halftime. Staten Island would end the second quarter on a 6-0 run but Queens would take a 20 point lead, 36-16 heading into halftime
The Knights used a 27-6 run, from 0:27 1Q to 0:21 2Q
(10:06) as they held the Dolphins to 3-of-14, while Queens shot 66.7 percent (11-of-15 FG, 3-of-4 3PT) and forced six turnovers in their big run.
Queens opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run to take a 43-19 lead at the 6:58 mark. But the Dolphins would not go away without a fight as they ended the third quarter on a 20-7 run and cut the Knights' advantage down to 11, 50-39 going into the fourth quarter.
The rookie duo of
Jennah DeGout (Bronx, N.Y.) and Reeves opened the fourth quarter on a 6-2 run and extended their lead back to 15, 56-41 with 7:09 left in the game. But a Dolphins 7-0 run would cut the home side advantage to eight, 56-48 with 4:27 to go.
Carlson and Reeves would match the Dolphins' comeback attempt as they kept the lead at 10 before junior
Khadija Demry (Brooklyn, N.Y.) took the game in her hands. The Brooklyn native tallied seven points from 2:24 to 1:26 before Gabel and Carlson iced the game at the charity stripe to earn a 73-64 victory Monday evening.
By the Numbers
Four players scored in double figures led by Gabel's season-high 22 points (7-of-14 FG), six rebounds, five assists, and two steals. While Carlson notched a career-high 19 points (6-of-12 FG) with six rebounds and four assists.
Off the bench, Demry tallied 13 points (6-of-13 FG) with four rebounds. After missing the last three games, Reeves stuffed the stat sheet notching a near triple-double with 10 points (5-of-9 FG), 10 rebounds, six assists, and three steals.
Queens shot 47.5 percent (28-of-59) from the field and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from beyond the arc. While Staten Island was held to 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the field and 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from three.
Queens tallied 21 assists on 28 made field goals and turned 14 Dolphins turnovers into 22 points on the evening.
