Rookies Shine as Volleyball Sweeps Molloy in ECC Play on Officials Appreciation Night

FLUSHING, N.Y. – As a six-game homestand opened Tuesday evening, the Queens College volleyball team was led by all-round performances as rookie Lindsay Osterhoudt (Orlando, FL) tallied career-high eight kills while classmate Taylor Smith (Temecula, CA) knocked in five kills to help Queens defeat the visiting Lions of Molloy University in East Coast Conference play. 
 
The offense tallied 37 kills as senior Alexis Deodat (Tampa Bay, FL) and sophomore Christina Franco (Lynbrook, N.Y.) combined for 16 kills to sweep the Lions in three sets (Set Scores: 25-22, 25-19, 25-22) to move to 2-2 in ECC play. 
 
With the win, the Knights ended a 10-game losing streak to the Lions with the last win coming during the 2015 season. 
 
Recap (Final Score 3-0 25-22, 25-19, 25-22)
 
The first set was a see-saw match as both sides trades the first 28 points. With the first set tied 14-14, the Lions went on a 6-2 run as the Knights committed five errors as the visitors went up 20-16. 
 
Trailing by four, a Lions service error would allow the Knights to capitalize as Osterhoudt led a 7-0 run as Queens went up 23-20. 
 
Molloy would cut into Queens' lead with two straight points before another Lions service error put Queens one point away from clinching the first set. 
 
A kill by Osterhoudt would give the home side a 25-22 first set victory as the Orlando native tallied five kills hitting a searing .667 hitting percentage to give Queens a 1-0 match lead. 
 
In the second set, both sides would trade points once again before Deodat and freshman Ryann Frontera (Dripping Springs, TX) led a 3-0 run as Queens jumped ahead 12-10. 
 
But the Lions would stay within distance before Osterhoudt and Deodat combined for a 3-0 run as the Knights went up by five, 20-15. 
 
Queens continued to stay one step ahead of the Lions as Osterhoudt made her presence felt in the front before a service ace from Franco put the Knights up by seven, 23-16. 
 
But three errors would see the Lions trim the Knights' lead down to 23-19 before another Lions' error put Queens one point away from taking a commanding 2-0 match lead. 
 
Frontera would close the second set with her second service ace of the match for a 25-19 victory and a 2-0 match lead. 
 
Looking for their first win over the Lions in 10 games, freshman Kendall Conrad (Carrolltown, PA) led the charge in the third set as Queens took an 8-4 lead. 
 
Leading 12-8, the Lions went on a 4-1 run as they trimmed the home side down to one, 13-12. Conrad would once again lead the charge as the Knights went on a 5-0 run as Smith and Deodat notched a kill apiece to put them ahead 18-12. 
 
After two straight points by Lions saw the lead trimmed down to 18-14, a kill by Deodat saw Queens jump ahead by five, 19-14.
 
But the Lions refused to go away quietly as they went on a 7-0 run to take a 21-19 lead. 
 
A kill by Conrad would stop the bleeding to get within one, 21-20 before a Lions kill put them up by two once again for a 22-20 lead. 
 
As Molloy looked to force a fourth set, the Lions' 10th service error of the match gave Queens the momentum they needed before the Lynbrook native Franco took matters into her hand as the sophomore tallied multiple kills to give Queens a 25-22 third set victory and their first victory over their Rockville Centre rivals in a 3-0 sweep. 
 
Match Highlights
  • Deodat led the offense with a team-high 13.0 points as the senior tallied a team-high nine kills and five blocks. While Osterhoudt notched a career-high eight kills and tallied two blocks.
  • Franco tallied seven kills and five digs. 
  • While the freshmen duo of Smith and Conrad combined for 10 kills with Smith tallying two blocks. 
  • Sophomore Despina Boudouris (Athens, Greece) tallied a match-high 29 assists to go with two service aces and six digs. 
  • Frontera tallied a team-high 20 digs and three service aces.  
  • The match saw the score tied 17 times with eight lead changes, with nine ties and four lead changes in the first set. 
Before the East Coast Conference contest, the Queens College Volleyball team recognized the ECC officiating crew in support of the efforts of D2 CCA and D2 ADA to recognize the P2R Officials' Appreciation Week.
