POMONA, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2019) - The Queens College baseball team clung to third place in the East Coast Conference standings going into Saturday's (Apr. 27) doubleheader with Saint Thomas Aquinas at Palisades Credit Union Park in Pomona, N.Y. The Knights would leave the Spartans' home field still clinging to third place after losing both ends of the double-dip, with STAC claiming an 11-8 win in Game One and a 7-2 triumph in the second contest.
Queens (22-18-1, 11-11 ECC) is tied with Mercy for third place in the conference standings with STAC, Molloy and Bridgeport all residing a game behind at 10-12 following Saturday's results across the East Coast Conference scope.
STAC jumped out to an early 5-0 lead after four innings before Queens could respond with four runs in the top of the fifth; the big blow came on a three-run home run by
Eric Roubal, one of his three hits on a day in which he drove in four runs. The Knights came within a run on two separate occasions---down 5-4 in the fifth and 8-7 in the eighth---but the Spartans had enough offensive firepower to claim the victory. Momentum stayed with the hosts in the second contest as Saint Thomas Aquinas tagged QC starter
Dylan Hughes for a four-run first inning that essentially sealed the fate of the Knights; Queens was stymied with only five hits on offense in the proverbial nightcap.
Weather permitting, Queens will play host to STAC on Sunday (Apr. 28) at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. in a doubleheader at Hennekens Stadium.
