FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 23, 2019) - After a late-inning rally in the opening game of a doubleheader fell short, the Queens College baseball team triumphed by an 11-4 margin against Bridgeport on Tuesday (Apr. 23) to obtain a series split with its conference foes and also maintain a hold on third place in the ECC standings.
Game One: Bridgeport 7, Queens (NY) 6
Queens was behind in the first game by a 5-0 margin (thanks to a run in the third and a four-run fifth against starter
Dylan Hughes) until
Ronmel Ocampo's RBI double in the seventh inning broke up the shutout. After UB scored twice in the top of the eighth to claim a 7-1 lead, Queens put up a three-spot in the bottom of the frame.
Eric Roubal reached on an error that scored two runs before Ocampo brought home another with a productive ground-out. With the Knights trailing 7-4 going into the final inning,
Ron Linsalato knocked in a pair of runs with a single to bring QC within a run. But with two runners in scoring position and two outs, Ocampo flew out to left field to end the threat. Linsalato and
Anthony Scotti both collected two hits in the loss while the Knights posted a ten-hit outing in game one.
Game Two: Queens (NY) 11, Bridgeport 4
The Knights fell behind in the second game early as Bridgeport tagged QC starter
Michael Lamneck for three runs in the top of the first inning.
Jon Strauss led off the bottom of the first inning with a double and the Knights would eventually send eleven batters to the plate and score six runs, including a two-run double hit by Matt Gutleber. Lamneck eventually settled down and combined with
James McGee and
Kevin Kochen to limit UB to just one run and five hits over the remaining eight innings of play. McGee pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth inning to get the win while Kochen threw four quality innings and recorded the save. Strauss had three hits in the win for the Knights.
Queens will dip out of conference to take on American International College on Wednesday (Apr. 24) at Hennekens Stadum in Flushing. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
