UNIONDALE, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2019) – The Queens College baseball team was undeterred after an extra-inning loss in the first game of a doubleheader with Molloy on Saturday (Apr. 13) at Mitchel Field in Uniondale. In the nightcap between the Knights and Lions,
Dylan Hughes and
John Rodopoulos combined on a four-hitter to win a 4-1 contest after QC fell by a 5-4 score in the first contest.
Game One: Molloy 5, Queens (NY) 4
Queens scored the first run of the opening contest in the top of the second inning. A one-out triple by Matt Gutleber starter the mini-rally which concluded with an RBI ground-out by
Anthony Scotti. Molloy responded in the bottom of the third inning as Nick Marino roped a lead-off triple to right field before Mike Nacinovich doubled down the left field line to send the tying run across the plate. QC quickly regained the lead as Scotti golfed a two-out home run to left field to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage in the fourth. After Molloy scored twice in the fifth to claim a 3-2 lead, the Knights tied the game in the sixth.
Joe O'Rourke drew a leadoff walk,
Eric Roubal singled and Gutleber reached on an error to load the bases with no one out. Scotti bounced into a double play, but O'Rourke scored to tie the game at 3-all.
Molloy scored a run in the bottom of the sixth but Roubal homered on a 1-2 pitch in the top of the eighth inning to tie the score once again; the Knights and Lions did not score in the ninth inning despite both teams putting runners in scoring position. In the bottom of the tenth inning, Molloy won the game as Chris Peralta rounded the bases for an inside-the-park home run to give the Lions the win.
Roubal had two hits for the Knights on the day while Scotti drove in two runs.
Michael Lamneck started the contest for Queens and threw five-and-two thirds innings of four-run ball with six strikeouts.
Game Two: Queens (NY) 4, Molloy 1
The Knights opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning after two singles and a wild pitch opened the frame.
Louis Antos bounced a ball to shortstop to send
Jon Strauss home with the first run of the game and the Knights doubled their lead in the third as a two-out double by O'Rourke sent home
Ron Linsalato to give the Knights a 2-0 lead. Nacinovich doubled home a run in the bottom of the third but that was the only run for Molloy in the game as Hughes and Rodopoulos shut down the hosts at the plate for the remainder of the contest. An RBI single by
Ronmel Ocampo and a run-scoring sacrifice by
Brian Watters in the top of the sixth provided the final margin.
Hughes worked an economic five innings, surrendering just one run on three hits while striking out a batter. Rodopoulos worked two one-hit innings to record his first career save, as Strauss and O'Rourke led the offense with two hits apiece.
Queens will go for the series victory on Sunday (Apr. 14) when the Knights host Molloy at Hennekens Stadium at 12 p.m.
