FLUSHING, N.Y. (Apr. 14, 2019) - The Queens College baseball team held a 2-1 lead on Molloy going into the top of the fourth inning on Sunday (Apr. 14) in the series finale between the two squads, but the visiting Lions edged in front on one swing and ended up taking a 6-2 victory away from the Knights at Hennekens Stadium.
Queens (19-13-1, 9-7 ECC) and Molloy (11-20, 8-8 ECC) split the four-game set over the weekend with Sunday's result in Flushing.
Queens starter
Jack Palma went toe-to-toe with Molloy hurler Billy Wildeman in the opening stages of the contest with both pitchers throwing two effective innings early. The Lions took the lead in the top of the third on an RBI single up the middle by Sean Hogan, which scored Jake Saltzman from second base to put Molloy ahead. Queens responded with a two-run frame in the bottom of the third inning as Matt Gutleber led off the frame with a double and then scored on
Ronmel Ocampo's base hit to center. Following a sacrifice bunt and a single by
Jon Strauss to set up runners on the corners with only one out,
Ron Linsalato skied Wildeman's first pitch to left for a sacrifice fly which scored Ocampo and put QC ahead by a 2-1 margin.
Molloy took the lead for good in the fourth inning with a two-out rally as a walk and two singles produced a bases-loaded situation for lead-off batter James Messina. The Lions' shortstop sent a 1-1 pitch from Palma into right field, a sinking fly ball that evaded the all-out dive of
Eric Roubal and rolled to the wall, scoring all three runners and putting Messina on third base as Molloy grabbed a 4-2 lead. The visitors scored a run in the fifth and seventh inning as the Knights were unable to grab any more offense against Wildeman, who pitched eight strong innings in the victory for the opposition.
Matt Gutleber and
Anthony Scotti both had two-hit games for Queens in the losing effort.Â
Queens will host Dominican (N.Y.) in a non-conference contest on Tuesday (Apr. 16) at 3 p.m. in Flushing.
