FLUSHING, N.Y. (Mar. 11, 2019) - The Queens College baseball team held a 4-0 lead after the first two innings but could not continue to match offense with Southern Connecticut State on Sunday (Mar. 10) as the Knights fell by a 15-12 score in a slugfest to the Owls at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lake Worth, Fla.
The Knights concluded their week-long stay in the Sunshine State winning two of eight games played, and the team is back home with a 4-6-1 overall record. Southern Connecticut improved to a 5-6 overall record with the victory Sunday.
Joe O'Rourke doubled home a run in the first inning to get QC on the board before the Knights scored three times in the second inning on RBI hits from
Ronmel Ocampo,
Nick Font and
Ron Linsalato. After SCSU scored twice in the top of the third to cut the lead in half at 4-2,
Eric Roubal drove in a run on a single in the bottom of the inning to put Queens ahead by a 5-2 score. The Owls would then jump on the Knights' pitchers, scoring four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to lead by a 9-5 score, but QC tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. After
Joel Mendez was hit by a pitch, Font drove home three runs on a double with the bases loaded to even the score at 9-all. A four-run sixth inning by Southern Connecticut, however, brought the Owls back in front by a 13-9 score. Despite an RBI single by
Jesse Spellman and two more runs in the ninth inning, the Knights could not make it all the way back to even the score.
Font had his best game in a Knights uniform to date, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs as Ocampo and Linsalato each had a pair of base hits. O'Rourke reached base six times in the contest (3-for-3, three walks, one RBI) as well.
Queens returns home to play Bloomfield College in back-to-back doubleheaders this weekend in Flushing. The Knights will host the Bears on Saturday (Mar. 16) at 12 & 3 p.m. in games that were moved to Hennekens Stadium from New Jersey while QC's regularly-scheduled home-opening doubleheader will be on Sunday (Mar. 17) at 12 & 3 p.m.
