Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Rick Rissetto, Director of Athletics Communications

22-Point Game from Tougas Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls to Bridgeport, 70-52

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Feb. 16, 2019) - Lucy Tougas scored 22 points and shot 10-for-20 (50%) from the floor but the Queens College women's basketball team could not capitalize on her afternoon as the Knights lost a 70-52 decision on Saturday (Feb. 16) to Bridgeport at Harvey Hubbell Gymnasium.

Tougas added four rebounds, two blocks, two assists and two steals for the Knights (5-18, 4-11 ECC) with Lakeisha Officer scoring eight points off the bench and Maia Fawcett adding seven in the effort. The rest of the Knights' squad shot just 11-for-33 (33%) from the floor in the defeat as Bridgeport (11-13, 7-7 ECC) rolled behind Samnell Vonleh's team-high 17 points to a crucial conference win. Briana Stoddart and Kayla Hill combined for 27 points in the backcourt for UB in the victory.

The hosts took an early 7-2 lead in the opening quarter before Queens went on a 7-0 run thanks to a three from Beth Bonin and back-to-back jumpers by Tougas. The Knights would lead by a 9-7 mark with four minutes remaining in the opening quarter but Bridgeport held the visitors to two free throws from Kaitlyn Mahon and a Fawcett foul shot from there. UB led by a 16-12 score after one quarter and the hosts opened the second quarter on an 11-4 run to further their lead over Queens. Tougas attempted to will her side back into the contest with a pair of jumpers midway through the period and a bucket by Nora Gabel would bring QC within a 27-22 deficit but Bridgeport ended the half with a 31-24 edge.

Queens showed some life in the third quarter as My'eesa Grant knocked down a jumper on the opening possession to keep the Knights within a five-point deficit, but Bridgeport cranked up the heat from the floor in that frame as well. The Purple Knights shot 57% (8-14) from the field including a three-pointer from Jaeonna Sutton to end the frame with UB comfortably ahead by a 52-36 margin. Queens would not get back within single digits after that point.

The Knights return home on Wednesday (Feb. 20) to host Molloy on Lucille Kyvallos Court at Fitzgerald Gymnasium. Tip-off from Flushing is set for 7 p.m.
