FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 21, 2019) – The Queens College women's basketball team utilized an 11-0 fourth quarter run to spur the Knights over Molloy on Thursday (Feb. 21) by a score of 57-47 in Flushing.
In a similar start to the men's contest earlier in the evening, Queens (6-18, 4-12 ECC) and Molloy (9-17, 4-12 ECC) struggled to find an offensive flow to open the contest. Jumpers by
Lucy Tougas and Jenna Silletti were the only points both teams had through the first part of action with the score deadlocked at 2-2 with 5:30 left in the opening quarter. Queens would then go on a 15-2 run to end the quarter as
My'eesa Grant took over in the low post with a six-point effort over the remaining minutes of play; the Knights led by a 17-4 margin after one quarter, having shot 50% (8-16) from the floor and holding Molloy to just 2-of-13 (15%) made from the field. The Knights stretched the lead out to a 19-4 margin on a jumper by Tougas with two minutes gone by in the second quarter but the visitors staked out a 10-2 run over the next three-plus minutes of play with Silletti knocking down a jumper to bring Molloy within eight points at 22-14. The Knights entered the halftime break with a 29-22 lead.
Molloy opened the second half on a 5-0 run as Marthe Guirand and Tyra Harrison knocked down a jumper and a three-pointer to begin the third quarter, bringing the Lions within a two-point game at 29-27. Tougas and
Kaitlyn Mahon responded with buckets of their own to push Queens ahead by six points but the Lions stuck close to the lead all the way through as a fast-break lay-up by Kathryn Gibson closed the scoring with about thirty seconds remaining in the period. QC led by a 39-35 margin at that point;
Emer Moloney opened the scoring in the fourth quarter but Harrison hit a three-pointer to bring Molloy within a 41-38 margin just two minutes into the period. Queens would then go on a game-clinching 14-2 run---with an 11-0 spurt dominated by the free throw line to pull away with the win.
Tougas posted a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals while Grant also notched a double-double (12 points, 10 rebounds). Bonin added 12 points and five boards with Mahon having a strong game (five points, six assists, seven rebounds) in the win.
Grady led Molloy with 13 points.
Queens will host Saint Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday (Feb. 27) at 7 p.m. with the Knights celebrating their seniors---
Kaitlyn Mahon and
Emer Moloney---in a pregame ceremony before the contest with the Spartans.
