Bovell's 22-Point Night Punctuates Men's Basketball's Effort Against East Stroudsburg

FLUSHING, N.Y. (Dec. 4, 2019) – Despite a 22-point effort from junior guard Elijah Bovell, it was a 30-turnover performance that doomed the Queens College men's basketball team on Wednesday (Dec. 4) in an 85-67 loss to East Stroudsburg at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.

The defeat dropped the Knights to 1-7 on the season while the visiting Warriors improved to 4-3 with the win.

Bovell added eight rebounds but also committed four turnovers as QC had difficulty with ESU's consistent press game; the Knights called their final time-out of the game with just over two minutes gone by in the second half thanks to the constant pressure of the Warriors' defense. Shomari Redd posted an 18-point performance with three assists and two steals and the Knights also saw nine-point games from Tyrese Crosdale and Eddie Mehmetaj; the former added five assists while the latter pulled down eight rebounds.

Kitt Walls had a team-high 18 points for the Warriors with Montrel Morgan adding 14 in East Stroudsburg's performance.
Queens was electric from the floor in terms of shooting as the Knights hit 25-of-50 (50%) from the field and 12-of-21 (57%) from beyond the three-point line.  The contest was back-and-forth for much of the first half, with QC staking itself out to a 16-11 lead at the midway point on a Mehmetaj three-pointer to beat the shot clock. ESU scored five straight with Walls tying the game on a three-pointer but Redd converted a three-point play on the other end to put the Knights back in front almost immediately. ESU took the lead back with eight minutes to play in the opening half on a jumper by Michael Pepin that gave the Warriors a 22-21 lead; the visitors fended off a staunch push from the Knights to lead at the break by a score of 36-33.

Three-pointers by Bovell and Redd had Queens back in front to open the second half, but the 39-38 advantage was instantly squelched thanks to an 11-0 run by the Warriors in a sequence that saw seven QC possessions end with five giveaways and two missed shots. That would be the ultimate final blow for Queens as East Stroudsburg pulled away from there.

The Knights are back in action on the road as the team heads to Manchester, N.H. on Saturday (Dec. 7) to face the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University. Tip-off from Stan Spirou Field House is set for 2 p.m.
