FLUSHING, N.Y. (Nov. 13, 2019) - The Queens College men's basketball team struggled to generate much offense against American International College on Wednesday (Nov. 13) as the Knights could not climb out of a double-digit deficit in a 74-62 loss at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
Junior guard
Elijah Bovell led the way for QC (0-3) with his best outing of the season, finishing with 27 points on 11-of-16 shooting from the field. Bovell neared his career-high, which was a 31-point effort on Nov. 26, 2017 against Holy Family; however, the Baldwin native was the only Knight to finish the game in double figures, accounting for a whopping 44 percent of his team's points.
David Grady III added eight points and eight rebounds and
Dwayne Henry Jr. accumulated nine points off the bench.
Zekiah Owens led American International (2-1) with a double-double (24 points, 10 rebounds) and the visitors had ten players score over ten points in the victory.
The Knights fell behind early in the first half and never were able to recover thanks in large part to a swarming defense from the visiting Yellow Jackets (2-1). AIC forced the Knights into frequent contested looks with just one opportunity at the basket in the opening half; Queens also watched as AIC went 5-for-11 from three-point territory and a near-55% field goal percentage in the first half. The Yellow Jackets led 46-28 at the half but the second half was more encouraging for the Knights. The team chipped away at the lead thanks to a much better performance (45%) from the field in the final twenty minutes but AIC's 40-26 advantage in the paint and 31-17 scoring reign off the bench doomed the Knights to the loss.
Queens will continue its home-stand on Saturday (Nov. 16) as the Knights welcome Jefferson University into Flushing for a 5:30 p.m. match-up at Fitzgerald Gymnasium.
