JAMAICA, N.Y. (Oct. 30, 2019) - The Queens College men's basketball team made a short trek to Utopia Parkway to begin the 2019-20 season of hoops as the Knights took a giant step onto the vaunted floor of Carnesecca Arena Wednesday (Oct. 30) to face Division I St. John's in an Division I/II cross-over exhibition. The Knights went on an 8-2 run to open the contest but eventually fell to the Red Storm by a 94-59 score.
Elijah Bovell led Queens with 22 points, showcasing a strong night of field-goal shooting. The junior guard was 8-for-15 from the floor and hit six three-pointers while also pulling down five rebounds and adding three assists.
David Grady III added 16 points and eight rebounds, but the Knights were undone by 22 turnovers that led to 27 points for the Red Storm.
LJ Figueroa had a game-high 28 points for St. John's and Mustapha Heron added 25 points for the hosts.
The Knights held leads of 8-2, 11-4 and 14-5 through the first six minutes of play as Bovell scored six points to lead QC in the early goings of the contest. However, a 22-2 run by St. John's firmly put the Red Storm ahead in the exhibition clash and the Johnnies led 48-26 at the halftime break on their way to the win.
Queens will open the regular season on Nov. 9 in Garden City, N.Y. for the annual Conference Challenge, hosted this year by Adelphi. The Knights will square off with the Panthers first at 12 p.m.
