FLUSHING, N.Y. (Feb. 16, 2018) - Gabriel Mendez scored a straight-set singles victory to lift the Queens College men's tennis team to a 5-4 win over Metro area foe Wagner on Friday (Feb. 16) at the QC Tennis Center.
The Knights (3-0) took a 2-1 lead over the Seahawks (4-3) after doubles competition with wins for the home side coming at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Lukas Martinez and Mendez won an 8-6 decision over Eric Poland and Dylan Walters to open up the scoring while Richard Sec and Cosme Jubera scored a 9-8 tiebreak win in the third doubles tandem to give QC the advantage.
Singles play decided the match-up as Wagner claimed victories at second, fifth and sixth flights over the Knights. By the time the Seahawks picked up the last win, however, Mendez's 6-2, 7-6 win over Anatoliy Lashkul at the top flight cinched the win for Queens.
Roman Laga was a straight-sets winner and freshman Hugo Evangelista de Andrade pulled off an impressive take-down of Ilya Kneppelhout at No. 4 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 thrashing of his opponent.
The Knights are back in action Saturday (Feb. 17) when Queens hosts Stonehill at the QC Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
