FLUSHING, N.Y. - The fourth seeded Queens College men's tennis team advanced to the NCAA East Region #1 final with a 5-1 victory over fifth seeded Southern N.H. Monday afternoon in a match held at the QC Tennis Courts. The Knights are set to meet top seeded Concordia with a berth in the Division II Championship in Denver, Colo. at stake.
The Knights set the tone for the day with a sweep of the doubles portion. The #3 tandem of Ryan Frankel and Federico Toscano picked up a quick 8-1 win. The #1 pair of Sharvill Nawghre and Roman Laga followed with an 8-4 victory, followed by an 8-3 win at #2 doubles for Gabriel Mendez and Lucas Martinez.
The Penmen got their first point of the match with the first singles results. Tiago Fernandez defeated Laga at #4 singles. SNHU's thoughts of a comeback were quickly dashed. Nawghre's 6-1, 6-3 win over Ricardo Marreiros put the Knights one win from advancing. Shortly thereafter, Frankel clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Miguel Marreiros.
QC and Concordia faced off earlier this season, with the Clippers coming away with a 7-2 win. The two squads meet Tuesday afternoon at 12:00 pm.
