FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College men's tennis team fell 5-3 to NYIT in the finals of the 2016 East Coast Conference Championship Saturday afternoon.
The Knights posted two wins in the doubles portion of the match. The #1 doubles team of Sharvill Nawghre and Roman Laga topped Matej Selecky and David Jiang 8-5. In #3 doubles, Ryan Frankel and Federico Toscano defeated Rafal Charkiewicz and Rares Ispas 8-2.
NYIT evened the match as Selecky topped Nawghre 6-3, 6-2 in #1 singles. A win by Lucas Martinez (6-1, 6-4) at #4 singles pushed QC back ahead by one.
From there, the Bears captured three straight victories to capture the ECC crown. Jiang picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at #2 singles over Gabriel Mendez, and Charkiewicz won 6-3, 6-4 over Frankel at #3 singles. Alexandrew Martinez's 6-3, 7-6 win over Federico Toscano in #6 singles clinched the championship for NYIT.
The Knights await their fate for a potential NCAA Tournament berth with the airing of the live selection show on Tuesday, May 3 at 8:00 p.m.
