Box Score BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – The Queens College women's volleyball team closed out its 2015 season with a road loss to LIU Post Saturday afternoon. The Knights fell in three sets: 25-22, 25-22, 25-14.
Coming into the matchup winners of four of their last five contests, the Knights were playing for a chance to end the season with a .500-record in East Coast Conference competition. After a loose start, falling behind 5-1, Queens fought back to knot the score at eight before taking a brief lead, 9-8. Back-and-forth play resulted in a late 22-21 lead for the Pioneers, who were then able to close out the set with three of the last four points.
Queens, feeling undone by the first set result after hitting a higher percentage than their opponents, got out to an 11-6 lead during the second frame. Five straight points by the Pioneers leveled the score at 14, before they went on another three-point run to take a 17-15 lead. The Knights fought back, taking advantage of attacking errors by Post and benefitting from kills by Arielle DiCocco and Tori Bowser. Behind 21-20, the Pioneers regained their edge by striking three kills and one ace to close the set.
L.I.U. Post put away Queens with two scoring streaks in the third set. An early six-point run put the home team up 11-4, and after the Knights regained their footing, Post attacked with a stretch in which they scored eight out of nine points to stretch the lead to 21-10. They held on to that 11-point advantage to take the set, 25-14, and win the match, 3-0.
Queens was led by DiCocco, who struck ten kills and posted a .600 hitting percentage. Bowser was responsible for 10 points, contributing eight kills and two blocks. Sophomore Jessica Yin led the team with 24 assists.
With the loss, the Knights wrapped up the season with a 7-9 conference record and an 11-15 overall mark. Their strong finish earned them fifth place in the ECC standings, one spot out of playoff qualification. Meanwhile, L.I.U. Post improved to 22-9, and 10-6 in ECC-play.
