Flushing, N.Y. - The third-seeded, Queens College women's tennis team advanced to the next round of the NCAA Championship by blanking six-seed, Goldey Beacom, 5-0, in a match played at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing. The Knights were ranked third in the region, while the Deacons were the fifth best team in the East.
The Knights came out strong, sweeping all three doubles matches. The team of Anna Rodionova and Jennifer Fridman won at first doubles, 8-2. The second flight combination of Yevgenia "Jenna" Plevako and Andrea Samson dropped just one game in their 8-1 victory. The final pairing of Kim Xiong and Aylin Mehter were victorious, 8-0.
QC entered singles play needing just two more points to caputre the match. Samson, at fourth singles, gave the Knights a point with a 6-2, 6-2, win. The final point came from Plevako in second singles, 6-1, 6-2. Mehter, Fridman and Rodionova were all leading their matches when play stopped.
The Queens College women's tennis team returns to action on Tuesday, May, 6, when they face Concordia. The match gets underway at 1:00 PM.
