Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College women's
tennis team, ranked 36th in the country, will be heading to
Surprise, Arizona after beating their local rival, Concordia with a
score of 5-2, int he NCAA Regional final on Sunday from
Flushing. Queens improved its overall record to 18-2.
The Knights avenged an earlier 5-4 loss to Concordia with a
5-2 win to propel Queens to the Final 16 in the country starting
May 8th, in Surprise AZ. Concordia, ranked 48th in the
country, dropped to 15-8 with the defeat.
At 3rd doubles, Francesca Fanchin and Anna Rodionova started
the day by beating Camilla Xavier and Alla Kravchuk 8-3; followed
by Erika Goldsmith and Weronika Kurka, who posted an 8-3 win
at 2nd doubles, giving Queens a 2-0 lead.
In singles play, Franchesca Fanchin beat Alla Kravchuk in
straight sets giving Queens their 3rd point. Then Anna Rodionova
won 6-4, 6-2 over Anna Mendes giving Queens a 4-1 lead.
Concordia was victorious at the 4th position making the score
4-2 in Queens' favor. Remaining on the court was Erika Goldsmith at
#1 singles going into a 3rd set and Andrea Samson at 3rd singles
also heading into a 3rd set.
Meanwhile, Daniela Celi in the 6th position ended the regional
championship for Queens with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Estelle
Fougeray. Erika Goldsmith and Daniela Celi, both seniors, were
victorious in their final home matches at Queens. Both girls made
it to the NCAA final 16 in the country for 4 straight seasons that
they played at Queens; a truly amazing feat!!
The Knights' fourth straight appearance at the NCAA Round of 16,
this time in Surprise, Arizona, will commence on May 8th!
