Queens, N.Y. - The Queens College women's
tennis team continued its run of sustained success on Saturday by
advancing to the NCAA tournament for the 13th straight
season en route to a 5-0 blanking of Goldey Beacom in the regional
semi-final on Saturday. The Knights will face local rival,
Concordia College, in the regional final on Sunday.
Queens set the tone early on, by sweeping all three doubles
matches to earn the first three points of the competition.
Jen Fridman and Andrea Samson defeated Flipia Correia and Anastasia
Melenikova at first doubles, 8-6. From there, Erika Goldsmith
(who was feted in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the match) teamed
with Weronika Kurka to defeat Stephanie Puentas and Gabriela
Chaves, 9-7. The third QC team of Anna Rodionova and
Francesca Franchin beat Vanessa Leon and Rocio Cavanillas, 8-1, for
the third point.
In singles play, Fridman and Rodionova took the final two
points, beating their opponents, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-1,
respectively. In the other matches, Puentas led Goldsmith
6-4, 3-0, Fanchin led Cavanillas 4-3, Samson took a set from Blanca
Sancho 6-2, 2-3, while Daniela Celi (who was also honored in the
Senior Day ceremony) won the first set against Bonomo, 6-2.
With the win, the Knights are ranked 36th in the
nation and have appeared in the NCAA tournament for the
13th straight season. The victory, which marked
the 5th straight year the team reached the round of 32,
also gives them the opportunity to reach the round of 16 for the
fourth straight year, having reached that round in 2010, 2011 and
2012.
