Two Double-Doubles Not Enough as Knights Fall to NYIT in Four Sets

Box Score

Long Island, N.Y. - Despite getting a pair of double-doubles from Arielle DiCocco and Ceren Kilic, the Queens College volleyball team fell to NYIT in four sets.  The scores of the sets were 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 and 25-21.  These two schools split there matches a season ago, as the home team won each set, and as the scores indicate, Tuesday's match could have gone either way.

The opening set saw both sides jockeying for postition as neither the Knights nor the Bears could get a stranglehold on the set.  With the score tied at 18-18, NYIT scored a pair to take a 20-18 lead.  A block from Francesca Indoni got QC within a point, 20-19, but the Bears got a point then Mackenzie Hamilton kept Queens within a point with a kill.  NYIT pushed the lead back to three points, but the Knights got it within one, 23-22, on another Hamilton kill and an NYIT error.  The Bears scored the next two points to take the set, 25-22.

The Knights responded in the second set by taking a 4-2 lead early on, as Angela Krantz recorded a service ace and Tori Bowser and DiCocco combined on a block.  Later in the set, the Bears tied the score at 8-8.  From there, the Knights used a 5-0 run take a commanding lead in the set.  The scoring spree came from kills from Indoni and Hamilton, a pair of errors and a combined block from Indoni and Kilic.  Later in the set, Xhesi Domi served up an ace to give QC a 20-15 lead.  Eventually, the Knights closed out the set on an Else Buchmiller ace.

Set three saw the Knights jump ahead, 10-6, on a Bowser kill, and they pushed the lead to five points, 22-17, on a DiCocco kill.  From there, NYIT closed out the set with an 8-1 run.

The fourth set had both sides even at 15-15, before the Bears pulled away for the four-set win.  DiCocco earned a double-double with 11 kills and 14 digs, while Kilic posted her third-straight double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs.

The Queens College volleyball team returns to action on Thursday, October 10, when they host Dowling College.  The first serve is slated for 7:00 PM.
