The Queens College men's tennis team, ranked No. 24 nationally in the Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Poll, captured a pair of victories over the holiday weekend. The Knights earned a crucial 8-1 decision in an East Coast Conference contest at the University of the District of Columbia Friday, before upending Chestnut Hill College by a 9-0 count less than 24 hours later.
Friday: No. 24 Queens 8, Dist. Columbia 1
The Knights swept all three doubles points to start the match, including 12th-ranked Attila Toth (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) and Nikolaj Wulff (Jr., Munich, Germany) taking out Aleksandar Grabovac and Simon Andersson by an 8-5 score at the top of the lineup. Seniors Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) bested Tomas Gajdusek and Bruno Reich, 8-4 at No. 2 doubles, while classmates Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) shutout Miguel Uzcategui and Carlos Quiroga by an 8-0 score.
Toth (6-3 and 6-4) and Ewels (6-1, 6-1), ranked No. 15 and 44, respectively, won their matches in the Nos. 1 and 2 singles slot. The bottom of the Knights' lineup was also stellar, as sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) (6-3, 6-love vs. Uzcategui), Andrade (6-4, 7-5 vs. Andersson) and Medrano (7-6, 6-3 vs. Quiroga) won in the Nos. 4-through-6 flights, respectively.
Saturday: No. 24 Queens 9, Chestnut Hill 0
The same three doubles tandems swept past the Griffins, combining to only give up two games collectively. Additionally, all six singles players won in straight sets, highlighted by Smith's 6-love, 6-love shutout at the No. 6 flight against Jermay Solema, and Medrano's 6-love, 6-1 score over Sammy Atri.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Knights next travel to Bronxville, N.Y., Monday (April 9) for a 1 p.m. first serve at No. 7 Concordia, in a match-up of the top-two-ranked teams in the East Region.
