No. 24 Men's Tennis Cruises at Monmouth, 6-1

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The Queens College men's tennis team, ranked No. 24 in the latest Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Poll, moved to 8-2 on the season Tuesday afternoon with a 6-1 triumph at Division I institution, Monmouth University.

The visiting Knights captured the doubles point to start the match by capturing all three flights of competition. Twelfth-ranked Attila Toth (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) and Nikolaj Wulff (Jr., Munich, Germany) took care of business at the No. 1 flight against Freddy Marcinkowski and Carl Jedlinski, 8-1, while seniors Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) and Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) bested Francis Jedlinski and Laurence Heads in an 8-7, No. 2-flight tiebreaker. Fellow seniors Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) and Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) won their match at No. 3 against David Sherwood and Stephen Suboleski, 8-3.

Toth, ranked No. 15 in Division II, won his No. 1 singles flight match against Marcinkowski, 6-1 and 7-5, while 44th-ranked Ewels came back from a 2-6 first set to get the better of Jedlinski, 6-love and 7-5 in the No. 2 slot. Sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) continued his strong play by defeating Jedlinski at No. 4, 6-7, 6-3 and 6-2, while Andrade (6-3, 6-4) and Smith (2-6, 6-3, 6-4) won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles against Sherwood and Suboleski, respectively.

Head coach Craig Schwartz's Queens side opens up East Coast Conference play Wednesday afternoon at home in Flushing, for a 3:30 p.m. start against Dowling College.
