CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. - The East Coast Conference
announced its weekly men's tennis award winners Monday afternoon,
and Queens College senior Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) became the
fourth Knights player to garner ECC Player of the Week praise this
spring.
Fellow seniors, Attila Toth and Tyrone Ewels previously won the
award, while sophomore Andre Pellegrino also earned conference
lauds.
Smith took part in eight matches last week for the Knights, and
was victorious in all of them. He teamed with Diego Medrano, the
10th-ranked doubles tandem in the East Region, to win all five
matches, while also capturing three singles victories - including
two by identical 6-love, 6-love scores. Included in Smith and
Medrano's week were important doubles victories against No. 7
Concordia and No. 44 Bluefield State (W. Va.).
Following Monday afternoon's 7-2 win versus Division I Fairleigh
Dickinson, head coach Craig Schwartz's Queens side is now 16-3 on
the season. The Knights are the top seed in this week's East Coast
Conference Championships, and will play host to fourth-seeded
Dowling in a semifinals match-up, Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
in Flushing.
