Jesse Smith Named ECC Men's Tennis Player of the Week

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. - The East Coast Conference announced its weekly men's tennis award winners Monday afternoon, and Queens College senior Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) became the fourth Knights player to garner ECC Player of the Week praise this spring.

Fellow seniors, Attila Toth and Tyrone Ewels previously won the award, while sophomore Andre Pellegrino also earned conference lauds.

Smith took part in eight matches last week for the Knights, and was victorious in all of them. He teamed with Diego Medrano, the 10th-ranked doubles tandem in the East Region, to win all five matches, while also capturing three singles victories - including two by identical 6-love, 6-love scores. Included in Smith and Medrano's week were important doubles victories against No. 7 Concordia and No. 44 Bluefield State (W. Va.).

Following Monday afternoon's 7-2 win versus Division I Fairleigh Dickinson, head coach Craig Schwartz's Queens side is now 16-3 on the season. The Knights are the top seed in this week's East Coast Conference Championships, and will play host to fourth-seeded Dowling in a semifinals match-up, Tuesday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. in Flushing.
