No. 24 Men's Tennis Wins Third Consecutive ECC Regular Season Title

OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. - The 24th-ranked Queens College men's tennis team captured its third consecutive East Coast Conference regular-season championship Friday afternoon, as the Knights wrapped up a 4-0 conference ledger with a 9-0 shutout victory at New York Institute of Technology.

Head coach Craig Schwartz's QC squad, which faces No. 44 Bluefield State on Saturday at day one of the Bloomsburg (Pa.) Duals, will serve as the No. 1 seed at next week's ECC Championships and play host to any contest it is involved in. The Knights will open play Tuesday in semifinals action against a yet to be determined opponent. Regular season conference play wraps up around the league this weekend.

Queens (14-3 overall) wrapped up three doubles victories to start the team well on its way to the overall team win. Twelfth-ranked Attila Toth (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) and Nikolaj Wulff (Jr., Munich, Germany) defeated Dustin Wenchel and Julian Marcon from NYIT (11-10, 2-2) by an 8-2 score, while seniors Tyrone Ewels (Pietermartizburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) bested Pedro Peixoto and Vojislav Pecikoza by the same count. Fellow seniors Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) combined to beat Filip Van Eylen and Eduardo Maurtua, 8-3.

Fifteenth-ranked Toth overcame a 3-6 first set in the No. 1 singles flight against Wenchel to notch a victory by second and third-set scores of 6-2 and 11-9, respectively, while No. 44 Ewels downed Peixoto at No. 2 by a 6-3, 6-1 decision. Andrade won against Van Eylen at No. 3 (6-2, 6-love), while sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) used 6-1 and 6-2 scores to knock off Pecikoza. Medrano (6-3, 6-love) and Smith [6-2, 7-6 (10-8)] won at Nos. 5 and 6 singles against Maurtua and Marcon, respectively.
