FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Queens College men's tennis team, ranked No. 24 nationally in the latest Campbell's/Intercollegiate Tennis Association NCAA Division II Poll, clinched at least a share of the East Coast Conference regular-season title on Tuesday afternoon, as the Knights blanked visiting St. Thomas Aquinas, 9-0.
The Knights (12-3, 3-0 ECC) can claim the regular-season crown outright and earn the No. 1 seed in next week's ECC Championships with a victory at NYIT, this Friday at 2 p.m.
QC gave up just five games apiece in singles and doubles play, and got off to a 3-0 start in the latter competition. Twelfth-ranked Attila Toth (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) and Nikolaj Wulff (Jr., Munich, Germany) defeated Armando Estevez and Antoine Venard by an 8-4 score in the top flight, while seniors Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) bested Dan Maysonet and Alexei Privalov by an 8-1 count in the No. 2 slot. Fellow seniors, Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) earned an 8-0 shutout in the No. 3 flight against Stas Margarcheko and William Tronsor.
Wulff (vs. Tronsor), Medrano (Maysonet) and Smith (Privalov) all compiled identical 6-love, 6-love singles decisions in the Nos. 4-through-6 slots, respectively, while 44th-ranked Ewels took out Margarcheko by a 6-love, 6-1 score at the No. 1 flight. Sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) defeated Venard at No. 2 by an 8-3 score, while Andrade got the better of Estevez at No. 3, 8-1.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Knights are back in action Wednesday, when they welcome Division I member Saint Peter's College to Flushing for a 3:30 p.m. start.
