PHILADELPHIA - The Queens College men's tennis team, ranked No. 24 in the latest Campbell's/ITA NCAA Division II Poll, moved its record to 7-2 on the season Sunday afternoon, with a 9-0 shutout win at Philadelphia University.
The No. 12 doubles tandem of senior Attila Toth (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Nikolaj Wulff (Munich, Germany) shut out Adrian Torroella-Cruz and Manoli Sgouros by an 8-0 score in the No. 1 flight, while seniors Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia) and Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) bested Kyle Burke and Ryan Christopher at No. 2, 8-2. Seniors Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) and Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) posted an 8-1 victory over Eric Guerrero and Nail Rachidi at the No. 3 slot.
Fifteenth-ranked Toth used a 7-2, first-set tiebreak to push past Torroella-Cruz by 7-6 and 6-3 scores at the top of the singles lineup, while 44th-ranked Ewels took out Sgouros, 6-1 and 6-1. Sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) used identical 6-2 scores to best Burke at No. 3, while Medrano (6-2, 6-1) and Andrade (6-love, 6-love) defeated Christopher and Guerrero and Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively. For the second straight match, Smith used identical 6-love scores to defeat his opponent at No. 6 singles, this time getting the best of Rachidi.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Knights are back in action Tuesday, when they travel to West Long Branch, N.J., for a 2:30 p.m. first serve at Division I Monmouth University.
