FLUSHING, N.Y. - The senior quartet of Attila Toth (Budapest, Hungary), Diego Medrano (Cucuta, Colombia), Tyrone Ewels (Pietermaritzburg, S. Africa) and Claudio Andrade (Sete Lagoas, Brazil) all picked up straight-set victories in singles play Monday afternoon, and also triumphed in their respective doubles matches to send the 25th-ranked Queens College men's tennis team to an 8-1 win over visiting No. 33 Bluefield State (W. Va.).
Toth, the 17th-ranked singles player in Division II, used 6-4, 6-1 scores to dispatch 35th-ranked Shikar Kapur in the No. 1 flight. The senior also teamed up earlier in the afternoon with junior Nikolaj Wulff (Munich, Germany), as the 15th-ranked tandem bested ninth-ranked Vlad Catlan and Niklas Sparr, 8-4, at No. 1 doubles.
All three Queens (4-1) doubles tandems won by an 8-4 count, including Ewels and Andrade at No. 2 over Kapur and Conner Pickering, and Medrano teaming with senior Jesse Smith (New York, N.Y.) at the No. 3 flight for a win versus Pitor Kruk and Guatam Sreeram.
Ewels bested 26th-ranked Catlan at No. 2 singles in straight sets (6-1, 6-2), while Andrade used 6-love, and 6-1 scores to move past Sparr at No. 5. Medrano took down Sreeram by a 6-4, 6-1 count at No. 6, while sophomore Andre Pellegrino (Sao Paolo, Brazil) utilized a third-set super tiebreaker to knock off Kruk, 4-6, 6-4 and 10-7.
Head coach Craig Schwartz's Knights now travel to the Sunshine State, where they will play at 11th-ranked Flagler on Thursday (2:30 p.m.) and No. 23 Florida Southern on Friday (3 p.m.).
